August 13th-16th

Today we had to say goodbye to an awesome group of mixed friends! Paul Larson brought up his buddies Jim P, Bud, John and Jim B from Yakima to do a little fishin’. Paul brought in his own 40 foot coastal craft to fish out of, the “Rascal” which is a beautiful boat that we were glad to have at our dock! Gary and Cindy Nakazawa brought their parents Adolph and Evelline from Kamloops to celebrate Evelline’s 80th birthday and Gary and Cindy’s 40th anniversary! Jeff Ostrove and David Regen also came up to fish with us, and Terry Keane brought up a group of his family and friends. Randy and Julie Mowrer also joined us here at the lodge for some quality fishing time. The planes were a little delayed due to some fog, so some of the group got to do a little sightseeing via air on the way in! We had a great start to the trip, and these guys were all eager to get out on the water! Captain Keith got Ken into an 18lb chinook right off the bat, and Randy got into a nice 16lber on Jacob’s boat! We woke up to fog on the burger boat day, but by the time the burger boat made the rounds up the the bush and down to the garden, the fog had lifted to reveal beautiful sunny skies. The weather was so nice and warm, and we definitely had some red cheeks by dock time! The fishing soon picked up, and team Kamloops had a great day with captain Keith! Evelline got a 16lb chinook, Adolph pulled up a beauty 34 lb halibut, his first one EVER! He also picked up a nice 14lber, as did Cindy! John pulled up a beautiful 20 pounder on Ben’s boat, and Dave got a 10lber with Adam. Coach got Julie into a 10lber, and David reeled up 16 and a 7 pounder, and Jeff caught a 15lber and an 8, making them tied for poundage! Paul’s boat brought in a nice 20lb lingcod caught by Bud, and Jim P caught a 22lb chinook! Queen Heather made it in the big fish chair after catching a 23lb chinook, and her dad got into a beauty 14lber with Capt. Jay. It was an amazing day on the water for this crew! The next day we enjoyed a beautiful beach bistro out at Lizard with a wonderful menu cooked up by Chef Dan, the chowder was a big hit! Jason and Dan really got some nice fish with Adam with the biggest one weighing in at 20lbs caught by Jason! Evelline and Gary were on fire with captain Jason as they were reeling in 17, 16, 14, and 11lbers! David and Jeff had a good afternoon bite when they brought in a 16 and a 15, and David pulled into the lead by 1 pound! Julie and Randy had a great day with Keith, they limited out on chinookies in the mid-high teener size. Β Amy caught her limit on Ben’s boat, and Terry got a 12lb chum and Heather picked up a 16.5lber. Right before lunch of Jake’s boat, the boys hooked into what felt like a piece of plywood! They all took turns reeling it up, and it turned out to be a 35lb halibut for Ken! The last morning was a successful one, and 6 chinook were brought back to the dock plus a nice hatchery coho! It was an absolutely wonderful trip, and we hope you all had as much fun as we did! We hope to see you next year! Thank you for coming πŸ™‚

August 10th-13th

Another great fishing trip for the books here at Sund’s! Richard and Ann Reardon joined us all the way from West Virginia! They booked the trip to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary this fall. Once again uncle Brent Peterson brought up a great group of friends and family, including his son Jake and his father-in-law Mathew, as well as Cory, Nate, Josh, Jerry, Mac and Tony. Munka Rick also joined us with his son Travis and cousin Bryson. Darren Case joined us for the second time this year, except this time he was kidless and brought all his college buddies! The 5 of them turned the conference centre into their frat house, and re-decorated with fantasy football posters and the WSU Cougars flag on the front deck! It was a great week, and the fishing wasn’t so bad either! Rick started the trip out with a bang after he hauled in a 26lber with his son-in-law Scott as his guide. Travis also pulled in a nice one on the first day weighing in at 17lbs. Smitty guided Jerry into a 14lber, and Bop got a beauty 24lber on Jason’s boat. The next morning, the hangover seemed to bring luck for the Cougars fans on Keith’s boat, as they all caught chinook in the high teens-low 20’s. Except Darren- he hauled in what we call a tink (tyee pink). Richard got into a nice 22lber on Captain Coach’s boat, and Brent and Josh got a couple in the low 20’s on Jay’s boat! Bryson got a beauty 17lber with Ben, and Rick brought in a nice chicken! We had a beautiful picnic out at Lizard as the fog was lifting and revealing the blue sunny skies πŸ™‚ Josh and Jake reeled up twin 20lbers on Jason’s boat, and Darren, Paul and Matt got into some low teeners with Capt. Benjamin. These guys got out early on the last morning and hit the water. Richard soon was into a nice fish on Jake’s boat which weighed in at 23lbs. Happy Anniversary to Ann and Richard! Smitty came home with a nice fish tote as his guys Nate and Tony got into some nice chinook in the mid-teen’s. We enjoyed dancing on the deck before dinner, learning about how fantasy football works, and watching these Americans try ketchup chips for the very first time! Thank you all for taking the time to come and hangout with us, see you next year! πŸ™‚

August 6th-9th

This week we hosted a group of old friends who haven’t been to the lodge in about 7 years. Brian Larrabure used to bring a group up every summer, and now they have started the tradition again! Brian brought his family and a big group of friends, including the Maus family, the Murphy’s and the Esposito’s. It felt like we had one big happy family here! We also had 2 babies come along with the group! Joey Jr. and Gabriela are both about 6 months old, and our deck time quickly turned into baby snuggle time for the hostesses! Fishing started out a little slow on the first afternoon with a couple of pinks hitting the dock, but it only got better throughout the rest of the trip! On burger boat day, Tyler pulled in 2 big octopus while halibut fishing! Thats’s not something that happens everyday around here. The boys on Jason’s boat had a good day when Sam Sr. pulled up a beauty 17lb chinook and a 22lb halibut! Brian got a nice 19lb chinook and Steven got a 12lb hali. All good eaters! Stepan and Trevor had a great day with Jacob. Stephan got a huge 52lb halibut along with a 11lb chinook, and Trevor got a 18 and a 15! Nick got a few beers through the kelp bong πŸ˜‰ Β The next day was one of the best fishing days of the summer so far- almost everyone loaded up with fish! Cari and Tyler got a 24lb and a 30lb halibut, along with their limits of chinook out on Keith’s boat! Cari got the big fish of the day with her 24! Ron and Shauna came in with twin 14lbers on Smitty’s boat. Nick and Trevor came in with twin 11’s from Coach’s boat! Mike and Maria got their limit’s of chinook on Jacob’s boat all in the low 20’s. Sam Jr, Sam Sr, and Joey got their limits of chinook along with a nice 43b hali on Jason’s boat! It was a great day on the water πŸ™‚ With the trip coming close to wrapping up, we heard some talk around the dinner table on the last night about sleeping in and Β “Pfftt we never catch anything on the last day.” Little did they know, there was a monster chinook swimming in the waters just minutes from our dock waiting to bite! Mike got his 3 year old son Samuel and his mother in law Maria up casually late on the last morning and headed down to Ben’s boat. These guys pulled up to the big rock, and were soon hooked up. The fight took about 15 minutes, and Mike was even bending down getting Samuel to reel in the fish. Eventually they got this sucker in the boat, and Ben calls it in on the radio, “DEFINITELY TROPHY CLASS” he says, “In the 40’s!” Β Mike’s fish weighed in at 43lbs back at the dock, where we took pictures and measurements for it to get mounted. This fish beats last years big fish by 1 pound, and is the biggest of the season so far! It was the best ending we could have hoped for Β for this group of old friends. Thank you all for taking the time out of your busy lives to come fish with us! See you upstream πŸ™‚

August 3rd-6th

How is it August already?? This summer is flying by! It must be because we are having so much fun here at the lodge πŸ™‚ This week we had Bruce Barlean and his CEO John Puckett come for their 3rd trip of the summer! We also hosted Bob Underhill and Rob Grill who came up last year with our Cabelas group. This time around they decided to bring Bob’s daughter, Lisa, and Rob’s wife Starla! Lou Johnson also joined us for his 5th trip all the way from Spokane! Robin and Bob Kraft also came up after they discovered Sund’s Lodge while watching a trip be awarded as a prize on wheel of fortune! Mike and Joe Mills from the Yakima Valley were also here, as well as Charlie and Evan Hicks. Team Herculson also joined us all the way from Cali. This group of new and old friends had blast out on the water, and enjoyed some beautiful weather. The wind only picked up one of the days, but not until the afternoon so we still got a full day of fishing in! Lisa started the trip out by reeling in a 18lber on the first afternoon with captain Keith! The next day, a few chinook were caught in the mid teener class before the wind blew up. The highlight of the day was when Jason set the hook on what he thought was a monster chinook on the backside, but as Bob was reeling it up, they discovered it was more of a heavy weight fish than a head shaker. When Bob got this sucker up to the boat on his salmon rod, they discovered it was a massive 48lb halibut! The third day of this trip was one of the best days we’ve had out on the water all summer. Every boat came in with chinook in their fish boxes! Smitty got Bruce and John into some beauties, weighing in at 20 and 12 pounds. Marc got a beauty 22lber on Jacobs boat, and Joe got into a 17lber with captain Keith. On Ben’s boat, it was a husband and wife rivalry as Startla reeled in her fish, hoping it was going to be bigger than Rob’s fish! They came home with a 16 pound chinook caught by Starla, and Rob’s big but not big enough 12.5lber! Good try Rob πŸ˜‰ Evan and Charlie weighed in with a 12 and a 16 caught on Coach’s boat. Jason killed it as usual in the local honey hole, and he brought in 4 chinook and a hatchery coho. Robin and Bob had told us that they would be happy bringing home 10 pounds of fish, but they caught a lot more than that in just one day! Robin reeled up a nice 22lber, along with a 13lber. Bob joined the tyee club with a 32lber, as well as a nice 17lber to top it all off! We hope they have a freezer big enough for all these hogs! We enjoyed a beautiful last night here at the lodge with the sun setting over the flat calm water. This is rare, as there is usually a slight breeze that picks up in the early evening. The last morning of the trip was a foggy one, but these guys snuck off the dock early and Team Herculson killed it on Ben’s boat. Marc pulled in a 20 pounder, and his dad Bob got an 18. Charlie ended the trip right when he pulled in a 15lber! We are glad the weather was good for you all, and we hope you all had a safe trip home! See you upstream. πŸ™‚

July 30th-August 2nd

Its been a crazy fun weekend over here! We hosted a group of 10 kids, 13 adults, as well as Scott and Heather’s family of 4 kids. It been super fun having a bunch of kids adventuring around the property hitting golfballs, looking for crabs on the beach, and reeling in some nice fish! We have the Kreps family here from California, who supply some of our wines! We also have the Case family, the Armbrusters, the Habermans, and the Emerson’s! This crew had an interesting time getting here- as it was too windy for planes to land at our dock, and too windy for our boats to run! All the guests ended up coming over on the ferry to town, where we then had a caravan of vehicles bring everyone out to the lodge! We couldn’t go fishing the first afternoon because of the gale force winds, but we crossed our fingers before we went to bed and hoped the seas would calm by the morning. Sure enough, the wind died down enough overnight that we could hit the water early Sunday morning. Erich Armbruster started the trip out with a beauty 20lb chinook that put him in the big fish chair for the night, and Julia and Grandma Joyce Kreps came in with twin 18lb chinook! Nancy Case reeled up a nice 16lb chinook while her grandson Ty came home with a tink (Tyee Pink!) Ben caught a 13lber and Dennis came home with a 13lb chum! On the 3rd day, we enjoyed a beautiful beach bistro in the Pearse Islands before heading back out on the water for some afternoon fishing! Rachel Haberman showed us all how its done when she caught an 18lber, a 13lber, and a pink. Her arms were shaking when she got home! Her mom April brought home a 14b hali, and Carie Case showed her 2 boys how its done when she reeled up a 15lber! Ty got a pink and Porter got a 9lb chinook! Steve Kreps was fishing with Roland when he caught a 17lb chinookie to bring home! Fishing was hot on the last morning of the trip for the kids. Jessica got a pink, her brother Josh got a 7lb chinook, Grayson got an 11lber and Ava pulled up a beauty 17lber! We were super impressed with Sammy, who had incredible patience throughout the whole trip as he watched his little brother and other family members bring fish into the boat. He was waiting for the big one though, and thats exactly what he got on the last morning! Sam went out with his guide Jacob and got into a huge 29lber! He fought it like a pro πŸ™‚ Sammy’s dad Dennis weighed in right behind him with a 25lber. Not a bad morning for the Kreps fam! The Case family came into the dock with a tote full! Darren and Nancy got nice hatchery coho, and Porter got a nice pink. Ty finished the trip off with a 24lb chinook on captain Keith’s boat! It was a great trip full of lots of laughs and we hope it was a relaxing family vacation for all of you πŸ™‚ Thanks for coming!

July 27th-30th

Hey everyone! This week we had team CalPortland come to join us! These guys use to bring a crew up every summer, but haven’t come in about 6 years. They flew in to Port Hardy and then we picked them up in the morning with our boats, and greeted them with a song or two at the Sund’s dock. After putting money in for a bet on the biggest fish, the guys hit the water and started reeling’ em in! Jon, Kevin C, and Mark got into some big chum and a nice coho on Smitty’s boat. Steve brought in a 14lb chum and Kirk brought in a 13.5lb chinook on Jacob’s boat! It was a good start to the first night party! The burger boat day was a little foggy, but as soon as chef Lyle started grilling everyone could smell where the burger boat was even though they couldn’t see it. A few small halibut were brought back to the dock, as well as a beauty 21lb chinook caught by Kevin W! Roland was starring as our guest guide again- and his guest Happy brought in a nice coho prefect for the BBQ! The next day of the trip the fishing seemed to pick up a bit, but so did the wind! Dale brought in a beauty 20lb chinook with captain Rollie, Chris got a 15lber with Keith, and Kevin and Will got a nice coho and a chum with Jacob. Tom caught a trophy chum on Jay’s boat weighing in at 20lbs, and Ray reeled in a huge 20b chinook. Scott, AKA Top Dog guided a bit this trip, and he got Kyle into a beauty 21lber right before he had to take off early for a wedding in Vegas! At lunch time the boats hit the dock for some lunch, and couldn’t get back out again because it was gusting 45km an hour winds! Instead of fishing, the CalPortland boys took the opportunity to ride into town and explore Sointula (and quickly found the bar) and relax.. not work! This crew slept-in the last morning of the trip and took off early to get to the airport. Although we missed a bit of fishing due to mother nature, we hope you enjoyed your time here at the lodge! It was great to have you here to make some more memories! πŸ™‚ See you upstream.

July 23rd-27th

Hey Sund’s Lodge blog followers! We’ve had an exciting 5 days here at the lodge. The Mathews crew joined us for another summer fishing vacation. How many visits is that now? 10 years? Bob and Ed brought along their sister Marilyn, her husband Rod, and their friends Brad, Rick, Mike and Susan. Jane, Paul and Paula also joined us for some fishing, along with Garland Pierce and his son-in-law Steve. Don Lancaster also joined us for another trip, along with his son-in-law Brian and his buddy Ken. This group of mixed friends from across the states not only went fishing, they went catching. Fishing was hot the first afternoon on the water as Don, Ken and Brian reeled up a bunch of chinook on Jacob’s boat in the 15lb range. Paula brought in a huge chum bucket, and there were a whole pack of big pinky’s brought in for some BBQing. The fish continued to bite into the second day of the trip, including a 100lb+ skate caught by Paul. It was an exciting fight for the whole crew on Keith’s boat, and they even got some great footage of it underwater before they released it. All six boats that were fishing brought in chinook, including Jane’s 21lber and Susan’s 16.5 and Steve’s 16. The chum are still coming through these waters pretty strong, and they’re getting big! We enjoyed a beautiful beach bistro at Lizard point after Mike hauled in a nice 22.5 lber on Jason’s boat! Paul, Garland and Don were lucky enough to catch a coho each to share with their families back home. This crew stayed for a full 5 days, so they got an extra burger boat day and and extra whole day of fishing! Bob pulled in the first halibut of the trip on this day, which weighed in at 26lbs! His sister Marilyn pulled in a nice 14lb chinook too! This family is stoked up for the winter πŸ™‚ On the last morning of this 5 day trip, we woke up to calm waters. Everyone grabbed a quick breakfast and hit the boats, and went all different directions from the dock. Keith fished right out front of the lodge and his guest Mike pulled up a huge 35lb halibut, and his wife Susan got a nice 14b chinook!! Ben and his team headed down to blackfish sound, where they filled up their fish box with chinook, chum, coho and pinkies! Don hooked into a big one, and Ben told the crew on the radio that they had landed a trophy class chinook. Back at the dock, Don’s beauty weighed in at 32lbs! Way to go Don – his second Tyee! Thank you all for coming to fish with us, see you next summer πŸ™‚

July 20th-23rd

Where has the summer gone?? Does anyone else feel like the days are being fast-forwarded? We have just had a great group of friends come and go. Flora Springs Winery brought a lovely mixed group up from across the states, and the Nevada Cement boys once again came to get rowdy here at the lodge. These guys got a late start on the first afternoon after their plane had to land in Campbell River due to fog, but as soon as the float plane hit the dock here at the lodge this group was itching to get out on the water. After a few hours of fishing in the sunshine, these guys came home with a couple lodge record pinks and Brian with a nice ‘nookie to start off the trip. The evening festivities consisted of about 100 rounds of caesars, and a wonderful dinner by our chefs. This group was more than ready to kick back and relax after a long day of travelling! On burger boat day, we once again woke up to fog, but that didn’t stop these guys from getting out there and killing it on the water! Captain Jason came back into the dock with a full fish box after Jerry caught a massive 68lb halibut, which just made the legal limit! This wasn’t Jerry’s only catch of the day – he also reeled up a beauty 24 pound chinook! Great job Jerry! Captain Ben also had a great day on the water with his guests. They were trolling for salmon on the backside when Rob M had what they thought was the biggest salmon hit of the year on his rod. After fighting this massive fish, Rob got it up to the boat and it turned out to be a huge 54 lb halibut! It was a good fight on a salmon rod, and I think Rob’s arm was a little sore afterwords. Joe and Rob H also picked up some nice springs in the high teens – low 20’s size on Ben’s boat. The boys on Jacob’s boat were super excited for weigh in time after their day! Brian, Vance and Tom all caught springs- Vance’s was a beauty 18lber, Brian caught a 17 and a 16lber, and Tom’s weighed in at 30lbs on the nose. Tyee! It was a good day on the water πŸ™‚ The next day, we all enjoyed a beautiful picnic on the beach after the fog cleared. Jerry’s good luck didn’t stop, he also caught a 21lber with Keith, which landed him in the big fish chair on the third night of the trip! The chum’s sure are running through thick- Smitty brought in a few on his boat including an 11lber caught by Terry, and Kristian caught a 14lber. Joseph reeled in a 1.95lb starfish as his catch of the day! Victor ended the trip right for the Flora Springs crew with a 17lb halibut he caught with Ben. Gerard, Vance and Spencer all caught some nice high teener chinook with Jacob to end their trip! We were sad to say goodbye to this fun group- we hope to see you all again next summer here at the lodge! Thank you for taking time out of your busy lives to spend some time with us! πŸ™‚ See you upstream.

July 16th-19th

It’s been a good week here at the lodge! The Book family came to reunite here at Sund’s from all across the US. The boys from Trail Appliances came to visit once again, along with our good friends Hal and Benny. Bruce Barlean came up for another trip this year, and brought some of his close friends. John and Andrea Kelsall came to fish with us from Vancouver with their son Alec. We had a great time with his wonderful group of new and old friends, and they brought the sun with them. It seems that fogust is already upon us, but since it’s still July we’ll call it.. Fogly? Foo-ly? Every morning the boats leave the dock in pea soup fog, but by late morning it burns off and turns into a beautiful blue sky day! On the first day of this trip, captain Jason guided John into a huge 37lb halibut! It was an exciting way to start out 4 days of fishing πŸ™‚ On the second day, the pinks and chum were biting, as well as some really nice sized chinook! James from Trail pulled in a nice 24 pounder with captain Smitty, and Jeff T got a beauty 24lber with celebrity guest guide Roland! Jordan reeled up a huge 11 pound yellow eye, and Andrea got a nice 11 lb flatty! These were just a few of the many fish that hit the dock after a full day on the water. On the third day, bottom fishing continued to be hot for the Book family, as Jordan reeled up a 9 lb lingcod as well as some nice sized rockfish! Rich from trail hauled in a 18 lb chinook as the biggest fish of the day, and we also had a few coho hit the dock! On the last morning, Bruce and Dick went out On Jacob’s boat and caught a 16lb chinook and a 13lb chum to finish off the trip! Bruce pretended he didn’t like wearing the crown in the big fish chair at brunch, but we know he secretly did! Thank you all for coming to fish with us, see you upstream πŸ™‚

July 13th-16th

This week we hosted Doug Jacobson once again as he brought his son and 3 son-in-laws, as well as a big father-son group of friends. These guys all had a great time fishing, but mostly eating, drinking and hot tubbing! Β These guys started the trip out right when Jack reeled in a monster 20lb chinook with his guide Jason on the first afternoon. The chum run is pretty strong right now, as quite a few were caught throughout the trip including Eric’s 17lber on the first day! These fish got the guys all riled up for an evening of beer chugs and hot tub karaoke. The next morning brought calm waters and sunny skies, but as soon as the burger boat headed out, the wind started to pick up on the backside. Chef Lyle managed to serve up a delicious lunch without losing a single burger bun overboard in the waves! Its a good thing he has his sea legs! The hungover guests though.. not so much. The wind storm brought in a wave of fish, and the boys on Jacob’s boat got into a good bite! Mike brought in a 15, Euby a 17 and David reeled in a huge 18 pounder which took the crown for the night! The third day of the trip was a bit dreary and it was threatening rain, so we had a delicious lunch on shore and headed back out for the afternoon bite. A few springs in the low 20’s were caught, as well as a few in the high teens. Doug, the main man himself, caught a huge 33lb halibut guided by captain Jason. The last night of the trip called for some more hot tubbing and beer chugs, but when the thought of being hungover on a sea plane hit, these guys behaved (sort of.. not really) and hit the hay to dream about the big fish they were going to catch the next day. These guys got out onto the water early on the last morning and were into a bite. Doug reeled in a monster 17lber with Jacob, and Β Buff pulled in a huge 24lb chinook with captain Pat! These guys finished their trip off right, and they all went home with some fish to share with their family and friends. It was great to see some familiar faces around here, and to meet some new friends. Thank you all for coming!
