July 9th-13th

Hey friends! Its Jenna here with a little update on what’s been going on here at Sund’s Lodge. On Saturday we had a group of old friends fly in for a 5 day fishing trip. Larry Hoeg brought in his usual group of great guys from Hy-Pro, and Laurie and Nick Medina joined us for their 9th time. Mary and Tony Spenser also came back after many years of fishing here, along with Colin Chandler and a group of his friends. We had a good run of chinook come through, but they seemed to wait until the afternoon to start biting! Colin’s pictures proved that the sunrises were well worth the 4:30am wake-up though. Captain Ben guided Dan into a beauty 28 lb chinook on the very first afternoon. The bite didn’t stop there- the next 2 days brought in some nice halibut in the 20 pound range, as well as a ton of pinks, some coho and a few chum also. Captain Jason guided his guys into some nice high teeners in the 3rd afternoon, and Rob, Dan and Ron fought their fish like old pros. Colin ended up sitting in the big fish chair with a nice 23 pound chinook! The fishing really seemed to pick up on the 4th day of the trip when all 5 of our boats came home with chinook in their fish boxes (all thanks to the turkey burger boat bite). The biggest of the day was a 26lber caught by Tony George from Hy-Pro, with a bunch of low 20’s and high teeners following closely behind the winning weight. A few of the guys on Jacob’s boat ended the trip with a bang when Roy reeled in a huge 26lb halibut, as well as a massive 25lb lingcod! The last morning was a nostalgic one for the boss man Larry Hoeg. The guides used to fish right here at the lodge all the time years back, but in the recent years the hot spots have been around the corner from the lodge. However, Larry Hoeg jumped onto Ben’s boat first thing in the morning, and they dropped their lines immediately after pushing off the dock. Ben thought he’d try catching one of those tyee’s like the one in the dining room here that Dave caught infront of the lodge in 1994. Within minutes, Larry was into a chinook! What a way to end 5 days of fishing. Larry’s fish weighed in at 25lbs back at the dock, and the boys packed it up and sent it home with him on the plane. This 5 day trip was one for the books, and there were lots of new memories made. We wish you all a great summer, see you again next year!

July 6th-9th

Rain, rain, go away..come again another day! This seems to be the theme song of the summer so far, along with Celebrate by Kool and the Gang, of course! The weather here just cannot seem to decide whether its January or July. Thats okay though, it doesn’t stop the fish from biting! This weekend we had the Russell brothers reunite here at Sund’s, along with Craig’s sons Nolan and Taylor. Boris Mamchur brought his sons Mitchell and Steven from Saskatchewan. Kristin Ross brought her father Paul for one last fishing trip before heading back to Tokyo for a few years, and Eric & Cole Johannsen joined us from Washington State. We also had Jill and Ron Pair come to the lodge to celebrate their 40th anniversary! Thank you all for coming, we had a blast fishing with all of you! While we were waiting for Kenmore to fly in with this group of guests, our guide Keith said “it feels like a tyee kinda day,” and he was right! These guys went fishing for the afternoon on flat calm waters with sunny skies, and Randy Russell landed a 31 pound chinook within hours of arriving at the lodge! However, the nice weather soon turned to overcast skies and wet stuff started falling from the sky. The rain didn’t stop these guys (or the burger boat) on the second day of the trip though. There was a good halibut bite, and quite a few nice sized ‘nookies were brought back to the dock. Mitchell landed a huge 50 pound halibut on captain Ben’s boat and team Russell kept the crown with a nice 24lber caught by Kevin! Eric and Craig also got into some big hali’s during this trip, weighing in the low 30’s. The coho, pink and even chum are starting to show up too! Kristin finished up the trip with a bang when she caught a 25lber with Keith on the very last morning. We had an amazing trip with all of you, and we hope your trip was as memorable for you as it was for us! We hope to see you next summer 🙂

July 2nd-5th

Happy Friday everyone! We’ve been busy here celebrating the July holidays! We celebrated the 4th of July for our American friends that joined us for rainy 4 days to do some fishing and relaxing. A big thanks to Jack & Cyndi Sparacio,Victor & Bonnie Reddick, Phil & Maggie Stalcup, Pete & Beth Chance, Jerry & Gigi Parisi, Jim & Max Williamson, Terrie Cox, Beverly Plost, and Anne Bugge for coming to spend your 4th of July weekend with us! This group hauled in a few hogs, including a 25lb chinook on the first full day caught by Victor, and then Bev caught her very first salmon on the first day also, which was a huge 20lb chum! Jerry came back to the dock with a nice 38lb halibut caught with captain Jason. It was a good day for these guys! On the 3rd day of the trip, another exciting fish story was told back at the dock. The ladies on Smitty’s boat got their lines tangled with a fish on, and couldn’t reel with a rats nest of fishing line. Captain Smitty came to their rescue and hand-bombed the fish up to the boat, and then pulled it in with his bare hands. It was safe to say he was the hero of the day for the ladies on his boat, as they all came back to the dock singing “Smitty’s girls.” This fish ended up to be a beauty 12 lb chinook for Debbie. A bunch of the ladies enjoyed a sleep in and went out later on the princess cruise with Jacob. These girls proved you don’t need an early start to catch the big ones, after pulling in the biggest of the day only 15 minutes after setting the lines at about 8:30am! Gigi was crowned queen that night at dinner for her 17lber, the first salmon she has ever caught! You guys were such a fun group, and thank you Phil for keeping us very entertained with your jokes, and roasting Jack, the gourmet oven seller. Thanks for checking in 🙂

June 29th – July 2nd

Hey Sund’s friends!

We’ve been having a blast this week with a great group of farmers from Saskatchewan, along with Mike Bernson’s family from Eastern Washington. The first afternoon of the trip was a little slow on the fishing side of things, but Anye managed to reel in a nice 15lb chinook which sat him in the king’s chair! It was sunny skies for the burger boat rounds on the second day of the trip, and Randy boated a monster nookie, weighing in at 29.5 pounds. So close to a tyee! As the trip went on our freezer started to fill up with chinook, a few coho, some nice sized halibut, and some tasty lingcod and yelloweye. It seemed like this group brought in the sunshine and left with it too! Come back! We had such a fun trip, although I think the Saskatchewan boys might need another vacation after this one to recover and rest up! Thank you all for coming, see you upstream!

June 26th-29th

Happy Canada Day everyone! We are celebrating here at Sund’s Lodge with boatloads of chinook, sunny skies, calm waters, kelp bongs and afternoon hot tubbin’! This past week we had beautiful sunny skies for our group of friends from Washington and Oregon! The new owners of the lodge, Bruce and Lisa Barlean, joined us to do some fishing and meet their staff. They brought along 11 of their friends, who all went home with some delicious fresh wild fish. The Jantz family from Washington State also joined us for a few days of fishing, along with Chris & Linda Mouldry and Rich & Judy Cabe. The ladies were in the big fish chair all 3 nights of the trip! First Judy with a 24lber, then Diana with a 19, and then Lisa with a nice 18.5lb chinook. These ladies know how to fish! We had some nice yellow eye, lingcod and a ton of halibut hit the dock too. The biggest halibut of the trip was a monster 55lber caught by Rob Tennyson. Thank you all for coming and entertaining us with your dance moves (cough cough.. DJ!) We all hope you have a great rest of your summer! See you next year! 🙂

June 23rd-26th

Happy Tyee Tuesday everyone! This weekend we had the guys from Mike’s Auto Body from the San Fransisco Bay area come and party with us, and do a little fishing too. These California guys toughed out the rain (barely) and slayed the salmon! We had a few boatloads of chinook in the 20’s, along with a few really nice high teeners. One crazy fish story came back to the dock that will be told for many years to come. Our guests Kent, Jay, Jeff and James were salmon fishing out in the bay of pigs on Jake’s boat when James hooked into a good one. The fish was going crazy, swimming under the boat and around the other lines. The fish went for one last run under the kicker, and ended up snapping James’ line.  The line went slack and the boys thought they lost it. A few seconds later, Kent’s rod started screaming just like James’ had! Much to their surprise, James’ fish had gotten tangled with Kent’s line, and now Kent was fighting the fish through his flasher! Kent fought the fish right up to the boat, and captain Jake gaffed the chinook and brought it in! This fish ended up to be the biggest salmon of the trip at 26 lbs! Its the craziest fish story yet of the season, and lucky fish for James and Kent!

We had so much fun with this great group of guys, and we hope you’ve all had a safe trip back down to that warm weather! For those of you headed up to the lodge, don’t forget your sunscreen! The sun is back 🙂

June 19th-22nd

Hello to all you Sund’s Lodge blog followers! The second trip of the season has come and gone, and we were sad to say goodbye to a lovely bunch of old and new friends from Seattle, LA and San Diego. Its been a rainy few days here at Sund’s Lodge, but the rain has only made the fishing turn on. Salmon fishing started out a little slow, but the burger boat brought our boats the burger boat halibut bite on the first full day of this 3 day trip. Our good friend John brought in a 30lb halibut, and a few halibut in the high teens were also brought back to the dock. Our Picnic was held in the beautiful Pearce Islands, and the liquid sunshine held off until the very end. Our guests enjoyed cooking up and tasting fresh dungeness crab on what seemed like our very own private island. Once the guests got their lines back in the water after lunch, our guest Phil got into a huge 19b lingcod on Ben’s boat! By the last day of the trip, we had crowned our guest Cliff as the “codfather”, as his hooks seemed to attract an awful lot of yellowtail rockfish, quillbacks, and pacific cod. He’ll be eating some yummy fish tacos for the rest of the summer! The last morning of fishing for this group of guests was hot! Captain Jacob’s boat came into the dock with a boatload of chinook, and Jason came in with a beautiful 26lb spring. What a way to end the trip! Thank you to all our guests for joining us for a few days of relaxation and fun. Our staff wishes you all safe travels home, and also safe travels to all of our future guests that are on their way here!

It’s here! The 2016 season at Sund’s Lodge has started with a bang! We would like to thank our guests Bill and Sherry Portuese for bringing their friends Loren and Darla Watts, Ryan and Crystal Burdo, Jay and Cindy Henning, as well as Captain Ryan up to the lodge for the first time. Also, our veterinarians Scott and Jackie Waltner joined us with their kids Jessica and Cole, as well as their friends Kevin, Robert & Jessica, Tim & Cynthia, Colin, Jeff, Joey, Jacob & Donna and Eric. Jeff and Mark Weber also joined us here at the lodge for the very first time! The chinook are starting to trickle into the waters around Malcolm Island, and our guides are fishing their hearts out and using their hottest lures to get these kings to bite. Captain Jason guided Joey into the first Tyee of the summer! A beautiful shiny 30lber bit in the afternoon of the second day of the trip! Halibut fishing has been great, with some nice chickens as well as a few larger halibut hitting the dock. The biggest halibut of the trip was a 46lber caught by Kevin! The weather here has been mixed with a few beautiful bright summer days as well as some chilly mornings where the high fog just doesn’t want to lift. We would like to thank you all for taking time out of your very busy lives to come relax with us on this beautiful Father’s Day weekend!

Bring on the Fish!

The start of our 2016 season is quickly approaching! We have 6 days until our first group arrives on our brand new dock, and we are so excited. Our staff have had an amazing off season, and are all ready to get back to fishing and serving our guests. Dave bought a new boat this winter, him and Bernie broke it in by reeling in a couple of beautiful spring salmon. Not only is fishing already heating up, so is bear hunting! Guides Jacob and Ben and hostess Jenna hunted a huge 7ft long black bear to fill their freezers this winter. We’ve been off to a great start so far, and expect nothing less for this coming season! We look forward to fishin’ with you all this summer!

Thats a wrap! Another season is in the books here at Sund’s Lodge. We’ve had a great fish run, beautiful weather and awesome guests all summer long. The entire staff of Sund’s Lodge would like to thank all of our guests who spent their time, and hard earned dollars, to come hang out with us. This summer we had 305 guests, who brought a total of 1901 fish into our dock. This 2015 season has been unforgettable, and we are looking forward to the seasons to come! Thank you.
