Hey everyone! This week we had team CalPortland come to join us! These guys use to bring a crew up every summer, but haven’t come in about 6 years. They flew in to Port Hardy and then we picked them up in the morning with our boats, and greeted them with a song or two at the Sund’s dock. After putting money in for a bet on the biggest fish, the guys hit the water and started reeling’ em in! Jon, Kevin C, and Mark got into some big chum and a nice coho on Smitty’s boat. Steve brought in a 14lb chum and Kirk brought in a 13.5lb chinook on Jacob’s boat! It was a good start to the first night party! The burger boat day was a little foggy, but as soon as chef Lyle started grilling everyone could smell where the burger boat was even though they couldn’t see it. A few small halibut were brought back to the dock, as well as a beauty 21lb chinook caught by Kevin W! Roland was starring as our guest guide again- and his guest Happy brought in a nice coho prefect for the BBQ! The next day of the trip the fishing seemed to pick up a bit, but so did the wind! Dale brought in a beauty 20lb chinook with captain Rollie, Chris got a 15lber with Keith, and Kevin and Will got a nice coho and a chum with Jacob. Tom caught a trophy chum on Jay’s boat weighing in at 20lbs, and Ray reeled in a huge 20b chinook. Scott, AKA Top Dog guided a bit this trip, and he got Kyle into a beauty 21lber right before he had to take off early for a wedding in Vegas! At lunch time the boats hit the dock for some lunch, and couldn’t get back out again because it was gusting 45km an hour winds! Instead of fishing, the CalPortland boys took the opportunity to ride into town and explore Sointula (and quickly found the bar) and relax.. not work! This crew slept-in the last morning of the trip and took off early to get to the airport. Although we missed a bit of fishing due to mother nature, we hope you enjoyed your time here at the lodge! It was great to have you here to make some more memories! 🙂 See you upstream.Read More ›
Hey Sund’s Lodge blog followers! We’ve had an exciting 5 days here at the lodge. The Mathews crew joined us for another summer fishing vacation. How many visits is that now? 10 years? Bob and Ed brought along their sister Marilyn, her husband Rod, and their friends Brad, Rick, Mike and Susan. Jane, Paul and Paula also joined us for some fishing, along with Garland Pierce and his son-in-law Steve. Don Lancaster also joined us for another trip, along with his son-in-law Brian and his buddy Ken. This group of mixed friends from across the states not only went fishing, they went catching. Fishing was hot the first afternoon on the water as Don, Ken and Brian reeled up a bunch of chinook on Jacob’s boat in the 15lb range. Paula brought in a huge chum bucket, and there were a whole pack of big pinky’s brought in for some BBQing. The fish continued to bite into the second day of the trip, including a 100lb+ skate caught by Paul. It was an exciting fight for the whole crew on Keith’s boat, and they even got some great footage of it underwater before they released it. All six boats that were fishing brought in chinook, including Jane’s 21lber and Susan’s 16.5 and Steve’s 16. The chum are still coming through these waters pretty strong, and they’re getting big! We enjoyed a beautiful beach bistro at Lizard point after Mike hauled in a nice 22.5 lber on Jason’s boat! Paul, Garland and Don were lucky enough to catch a coho each to share with their families back home. This crew stayed for a full 5 days, so they got an extra burger boat day and and extra whole day of fishing! Bob pulled in the first halibut of the trip on this day, which weighed in at 26lbs! His sister Marilyn pulled in a nice 14lb chinook too! This family is stoked up for the winter 🙂 On the last morning of this 5 day trip, we woke up to calm waters. Everyone grabbed a quick breakfast and hit the boats, and went all different directions from the dock. Keith fished right out front of the lodge and his guest Mike pulled up a huge 35lb halibut, and his wife Susan got a nice 14b chinook!! Ben and his team headed down to blackfish sound, where they filled up their fish box with chinook, chum, coho and pinkies! Don hooked into a big one, and Ben told the crew on the radio that they had landed a trophy class chinook. Back at the dock, Don’s beauty weighed in at 32lbs! Way to go Don – his second Tyee! Thank you all for coming to fish with us, see you next summer 🙂Read More ›
Where has the summer gone?? Does anyone else feel like the days are being fast-forwarded? We have just had a great group of friends come and go. Flora Springs Winery brought a lovely mixed group up from across the states, and the Nevada Cement boys once again came to get rowdy here at the lodge. These guys got a late start on the first afternoon after their plane had to land in Campbell River due to fog, but as soon as the float plane hit the dock here at the lodge this group was itching to get out on the water. After a few hours of fishing in the sunshine, these guys came home with a couple lodge record pinks and Brian with a nice ‘nookie to start off the trip. The evening festivities consisted of about 100 rounds of caesars, and a wonderful dinner by our chefs. This group was more than ready to kick back and relax after a long day of travelling! On burger boat day, we once again woke up to fog, but that didn’t stop these guys from getting out there and killing it on the water! Captain Jason came back into the dock with a full fish box after Jerry caught a massive 68lb halibut, which just made the legal limit! This wasn’t Jerry’s only catch of the day – he also reeled up a beauty 24 pound chinook! Great job Jerry! Captain Ben also had a great day on the water with his guests. They were trolling for salmon on the backside when Rob M had what they thought was the biggest salmon hit of the year on his rod. After fighting this massive fish, Rob got it up to the boat and it turned out to be a huge 54 lb halibut! It was a good fight on a salmon rod, and I think Rob’s arm was a little sore afterwords. Joe and Rob H also picked up some nice springs in the high teens – low 20’s size on Ben’s boat. The boys on Jacob’s boat were super excited for weigh in time after their day! Brian, Vance and Tom all caught springs- Vance’s was a beauty 18lber, Brian caught a 17 and a 16lber, and Tom’s weighed in at 30lbs on the nose. Tyee! It was a good day on the water 🙂 The next day, we all enjoyed a beautiful picnic on the beach after the fog cleared. Jerry’s good luck didn’t stop, he also caught a 21lber with Keith, which landed him in the big fish chair on the third night of the trip! The chum’s sure are running through thick- Smitty brought in a few on his boat including an 11lber caught by Terry, and Kristian caught a 14lber. Joseph reeled in a 1.95lb starfish as his catch of the day! Victor ended the trip right for the Flora Springs crew with a 17lb halibut he caught with Ben. Gerard, Vance and Spencer all caught some nice high teener chinook with Jacob to end their trip! We were sad to say goodbye to this fun group- we hope to see you all again next summer here at the lodge! Thank you for taking time out of your busy lives to spend some time with us! 🙂 See you upstream.Read More ›
It’s been a good week here at the lodge! The Book family came to reunite here at Sund’s from all across the US. The boys from Trail Appliances came to visit once again, along with our good friends Hal and Benny. Bruce Barlean came up for another trip this year, and brought some of his close friends. John and Andrea Kelsall came to fish with us from Vancouver with their son Alec. We had a great time with his wonderful group of new and old friends, and they brought the sun with them. It seems that fogust is already upon us, but since it’s still July we’ll call it.. Fogly? Foo-ly? Every morning the boats leave the dock in pea soup fog, but by late morning it burns off and turns into a beautiful blue sky day! On the first day of this trip, captain Jason guided John into a huge 37lb halibut! It was an exciting way to start out 4 days of fishing 🙂 On the second day, the pinks and chum were biting, as well as some really nice sized chinook! James from Trail pulled in a nice 24 pounder with captain Smitty, and Jeff T got a beauty 24lber with celebrity guest guide Roland! Jordan reeled up a huge 11 pound yellow eye, and Andrea got a nice 11 lb flatty! These were just a few of the many fish that hit the dock after a full day on the water. On the third day, bottom fishing continued to be hot for the Book family, as Jordan reeled up a 9 lb lingcod as well as some nice sized rockfish! Rich from trail hauled in a 18 lb chinook as the biggest fish of the day, and we also had a few coho hit the dock! On the last morning, Bruce and Dick went out On Jacob’s boat and caught a 16lb chinook and a 13lb chum to finish off the trip! Bruce pretended he didn’t like wearing the crown in the big fish chair at brunch, but we know he secretly did! Thank you all for coming to fish with us, see you upstream 🙂Read More ›
This week we hosted Doug Jacobson once again as he brought his son and 3 son-in-laws, as well as a big father-son group of friends. These guys all had a great time fishing, but mostly eating, drinking and hot tubbing! These guys started the trip out right when Jack reeled in a monster 20lb chinook with his guide Jason on the first afternoon. The chum run is pretty strong right now, as quite a few were caught throughout the trip including Eric’s 17lber on the first day! These fish got the guys all riled up for an evening of beer chugs and hot tub karaoke. The next morning brought calm waters and sunny skies, but as soon as the burger boat headed out, the wind started to pick up on the backside. Chef Lyle managed to serve up a delicious lunch without losing a single burger bun overboard in the waves! Its a good thing he has his sea legs! The hungover guests though.. not so much. The wind storm brought in a wave of fish, and the boys on Jacob’s boat got into a good bite! Mike brought in a 15, Euby a 17 and David reeled in a huge 18 pounder which took the crown for the night! The third day of the trip was a bit dreary and it was threatening rain, so we had a delicious lunch on shore and headed back out for the afternoon bite. A few springs in the low 20’s were caught, as well as a few in the high teens. Doug, the main man himself, caught a huge 33lb halibut guided by captain Jason. The last night of the trip called for some more hot tubbing and beer chugs, but when the thought of being hungover on a sea plane hit, these guys behaved (sort of.. not really) and hit the hay to dream about the big fish they were going to catch the next day. These guys got out onto the water early on the last morning and were into a bite. Doug reeled in a monster 17lber with Jacob, and Buff pulled in a huge 24lb chinook with captain Pat! These guys finished their trip off right, and they all went home with some fish to share with their family and friends. It was great to see some familiar faces around here, and to meet some new friends. Thank you all for coming!Read More ›
Hey friends! Its Jenna here with a little update on what’s been going on here at Sund’s Lodge. On Saturday we had a group of old friends fly in for a 5 day fishing trip. Larry Hoeg brought in his usual group of great guys from Hy-Pro, and Laurie and Nick Medina joined us for their 9th time. Mary and Tony Spenser also came back after many years of fishing here, along with Colin Chandler and a group of his friends. We had a good run of chinook come through, but they seemed to wait until the afternoon to start biting! Colin’s pictures proved that the sunrises were well worth the 4:30am wake-up though. Captain Ben guided Dan into a beauty 28 lb chinook on the very first afternoon. The bite didn’t stop there- the next 2 days brought in some nice halibut in the 20 pound range, as well as a ton of pinks, some coho and a few chum also. Captain Jason guided his guys into some nice high teeners in the 3rd afternoon, and Rob, Dan and Ron fought their fish like old pros. Colin ended up sitting in the big fish chair with a nice 23 pound chinook! The fishing really seemed to pick up on the 4th day of the trip when all 5 of our boats came home with chinook in their fish boxes (all thanks to the turkey burger boat bite). The biggest of the day was a 26lber caught by Tony George from Hy-Pro, with a bunch of low 20’s and high teeners following closely behind the winning weight. A few of the guys on Jacob’s boat ended the trip with a bang when Roy reeled in a huge 26lb halibut, as well as a massive 25lb lingcod! The last morning was a nostalgic one for the boss man Larry Hoeg. The guides used to fish right here at the lodge all the time years back, but in the recent years the hot spots have been around the corner from the lodge. However, Larry Hoeg jumped onto Ben’s boat first thing in the morning, and they dropped their lines immediately after pushing off the dock. Ben thought he’d try catching one of those tyee’s like the one in the dining room here that Dave caught infront of the lodge in 1994. Within minutes, Larry was into a chinook! What a way to end 5 days of fishing. Larry’s fish weighed in at 25lbs back at the dock, and the boys packed it up and sent it home with him on the plane. This 5 day trip was one for the books, and there were lots of new memories made. We wish you all a great summer, see you again next year!

Rain, rain, go away..come again another day! This seems to be the theme song of the summer so far, along with Celebrate by Kool and the Gang, of course! The weather here just cannot seem to decide whether its January or July. Thats okay though, it doesn’t stop the fish from biting! This weekend we had the Russell brothers reunite here at Sund’s, along with Craig’s sons Nolan and Taylor. Boris Mamchur brought his sons Mitchell and Steven from Saskatchewan. Kristin Ross brought her father Paul for one last fishing trip before heading back to Tokyo for a few years, and Eric & Cole Johannsen joined us from Washington State. We also had Jill and Ron Pair come to the lodge to celebrate their 40th anniversary! Thank you all for coming, we had a blast fishing with all of you! While we were waiting for Kenmore to fly in with this group of guests, our guide Keith said “it feels like a tyee kinda day,” and he was right! These guys went fishing for the afternoon on flat calm waters with sunny skies, and Randy Russell landed a 31 pound chinook within hours of arriving at the lodge! However, the nice weather soon turned to overcast skies and wet stuff started falling from the sky. The rain didn’t stop these guys (or the burger boat) on the second day of the trip though. There was a good halibut bite, and quite a few nice sized ‘nookies were brought back to the dock. Mitchell landed a huge 50 pound halibut on captain Ben’s boat and team Russell kept the crown with a nice 24lber caught by Kevin! Eric and Craig also got into some big hali’s during this trip, weighing in the low 30’s. The coho, pink and even chum are starting to show up too! Kristin finished up the trip with a bang when she caught a 25lber with Keith on the very last morning. We had an amazing trip with all of you, and we hope your trip was as memorable for you as it was for us! We hope to see you next summer 🙂Read More ›
Happy Friday everyone! We’ve been busy here celebrating the July holidays! We celebrated the 4th of July for our American friends that joined us for rainy 4 days to do some fishing and relaxing. A big thanks to Jack & Cyndi Sparacio,Victor & Bonnie Reddick, Phil & Maggie Stalcup, Pete & Beth Chance, Jerry & Gigi Parisi, Jim & Max Williamson, Terrie Cox, Beverly Plost, and Anne Bugge for coming to spend your 4th of July weekend with us! This group hauled in a few hogs, including a 25lb chinook on the first full day caught by Victor, and then Bev caught her very first salmon on the first day also, which was a huge 20lb chum! Jerry came back to the dock with a nice 38lb halibut caught with captain Jason. It was a good day for these guys! On the 3rd day of the trip, another exciting fish story was told back at the dock. The ladies on Smitty’s boat got their lines tangled with a fish on, and couldn’t reel with a rats nest of fishing line. Captain Smitty came to their rescue and hand-bombed the fish up to the boat, and then pulled it in with his bare hands. It was safe to say he was the hero of the day for the ladies on his boat, as they all came back to the dock singing “Smitty’s girls.” This fish ended up to be a beauty 12 lb chinook for Debbie. A bunch of the ladies enjoyed a sleep in and went out later on the princess cruise with Jacob. These girls proved you don’t need an early start to catch the big ones, after pulling in the biggest of the day only 15 minutes after setting the lines at about 8:30am! Gigi was crowned queen that night at dinner for her 17lber, the first salmon she has ever caught! You guys were such a fun group, and thank you Phil for keeping us very entertained with your jokes, and roasting Jack, the gourmet oven seller. Thanks for checking in 🙂Read More ›
Hey Sund’s friends!
We’ve been having a blast this week with a great group of farmers from Saskatchewan, along with Mike Bernson’s family from Eastern Washington. The first afternoon of the trip was a little slow on the fishing side of things, but Anye managed to reel in a nice 15lb chinook which sat him in the king’s chair! It was sunny skies for the burger boat rounds on the second day of the trip, and Randy boated a monster nookie, weighing in at 29.5 pounds. So close to a tyee! As the trip went on our freezer started to fill up with chinook, a few coho, some nice sized halibut, and some tasty lingcod and yelloweye. It seemed like this group brought in the sunshine and left with it too! Come back! We had such a fun trip, although I think the Saskatchewan boys might need another vacation after this one to recover and rest up! Thank you all for coming, see you upstream!

Happy Canada Day everyone! We are celebrating here at Sund’s Lodge with boatloads of chinook, sunny skies, calm waters, kelp bongs and afternoon hot tubbin’! This past week we had beautiful sunny skies for our group of friends from Washington and Oregon! The new owners of the lodge, Bruce and Lisa Barlean, joined us to do some fishing and meet their staff. They brought along 11 of their friends, who all went home with some delicious fresh wild fish. The Jantz family from Washington State also joined us for a few days of fishing, along with Chris & Linda Mouldry and Rich & Judy Cabe. The ladies were in the big fish chair all 3 nights of the trip! First Judy with a 24lber, then Diana with a 19, and then Lisa with a nice 18.5lb chinook. These ladies know how to fish! We had some nice yellow eye, lingcod and a ton of halibut hit the dock too. The biggest halibut of the trip was a monster 55lber caught by Rob Tennyson. Thank you all for coming and entertaining us with your dance moves (cough cough.. DJ!) We all hope you have a great rest of your summer! See you next year! 🙂Read More ›
