Happiness Is…a floatplane at your picnic

Friday, June 19th, 2009

At yesterday’s beach bistro in the wonderful Plumper Islands, we were just boiling some freshly caught Dungeness Crab when the floatplane from Kenmore Air called on the radio to tell me they had a special delivery for Fathers Day.  The plane landed out on Johnstone Strait and taxied right into the beach.  The delivery?  Heather, Avery, and Kincaid Sund- my family.  I was thrilled!  The pilot (Tim) stayed and had some of what he called “the finest chowder he’d ever eaten” and soon was off flying back to Seattle.  A special treat indeed!

Kacis tyee 30 pound chinook

Kacis tyee 30 pound chinook

30 pound tyee for Kaci on the last morning!  The heat of Thursday afternoon turned into a strong rain Friday morning and brought lot sof fish too! Kaci got this 30 pounder with Capt. Scott and her brother Ryan Bernsen got a 23 pounder.

The other boats loaded up on chinooks and we had an amazing morning…all in just a few hours!

The group is going home today with lots of fish- everyone limited on halibut, and 2 new members of the tyee club (which is a chinook over 30 pounds).  Steve Altman and Kaci Bernsen.  It was an amazing trip and the fishing looks like it is going to keep getting better!  The boats are out right now fishing the first session with the new group and there are reports of 2 more fish over 30 pounds.  Stay tuned!

Charlies big halibut day 2

Charlie's halibut was top fish
Charlie’s halibut was top fish

Charlie got the top honors today with this halibut.  A number of nice fish today but not everyone had good luck.  A few nice halibut and salmon fell off the lines and now we’ve got a few fish stories being told arond the dinner table!  A great day as the rain let off and let us experience the Inside Passage with very comfortable water.

Keith and Ryan of the Eagle Lakes crew had a very good day, and Kaci and Jessica got to sleep in and then join the boys at lunch and catch some fish.

Last but not least, the Corus Estates guys had a ton of fun.  There were personal records for most Kokanees but they also loaded up on the bottom fish (see below).  As I write, the guests are sitting down by the fire, roasting S’mores and telling fish stories of the day.  The perfect way to end the day!

Guest Steven Altman catches big fish of the summer!

Tuesday, June 16th, 2009

Guest Steve Altman celebrates joining the tyee club with this trophy class 38 pounder caught off the Wall today with Captain Scott.  It was an epic battle for over 30 minutes…one of the best fighting fish Scott could ever remember.  Steve did a fantastic job and now has the current record for biggest fish of the summer!

Terry's big fish

Terry's big fish

Terry gets his big chinook.  After watching his wife and daughters catch some slabs in the previous two days, Monday saw Terry get his chance with this nice teener chinook caught on the last morning.  What a great trip for the Neitenbach family!!!!

Geoff takes a dip

Tuesday, June 16th, 2009

Fishmaster Geoff Millar had a great day guiding on Sunday- 7 halibut guided on his boat.  However, he failed to deliver on a promise he made to guest Hartley Duncan that Hartley would catch a big halibut on Geoff’s boat that day.  The bet?  Geoff would jump off the dock if Hartley didn’t hook up.  Well take a look…sure enough, Geoff took a dip!

Lucy's big fish of the day

Lucy's big fish of the day

What a great day.  We had an amazing beach lunch and the salmon, which have been gone the last 2 days, have come back into our zone.  Lucy had a lot of fun with this chinook and nearly joined the Tyee club.  She experienced first hand why these reels are called “knuckle-busters.”  Don’t worry…no broken knuckles…just bloodied!  Congrats!

Merv's big chinook

Merv got this 25 pounder off the wall near the end of the trip with Captain Nick.  They had a great fishing day together and Ted and Merv both limited on halibut.

Marian Neitenbach

Marian continued her lucky streak as she and her sister both got into big chinooks today.

Lastly Team Exstrum had another stellar day and will be taking lots of fish home to Nebraska tomorrow with them!

Big fish of the day for Joy!

Big fish of the day for Joy!

Another beautiful sunny day on the Inside Passage.  It was a Burger Boat day so the boats fished all day.  The guides were surprised that the salmon were hard to find but luckily they got into the halibut.  All the boats limited on halibut and the biggest was this 38 pounder caught by Joy Exstrum from Nebraska.  Super job Joy!  Not to mention they saw hundreds of white sided dolphins and even Orca whales chasing salmon into the air!  That is a great day!

Alex and the Neitenbachs with their limit of halis

The Stark/Neitenbach party had a great day with a limit of halibut for their crew- with Alissa and Marian getting the two biggest of their group.  They ended their day at the famous U’Mista Cultural Center to tour the area’s First Nations heritage.

The Exstrum Boys!

Brothers Adam, Jeff and Matt Exstrum also had a great day as witnessed with their limit of halibut.

Truly another good day at Sund’s Lodge!
