Aleta's hog day 1

Aleta's hog day 1

Day 1 with the new group of couples from around Alberta, Arizona, California and Washington.  It is a lot of fun!  Fishing was slow this afternoon but several boats got into some coho to make things interesting.  The biggest fish of the day went to Aleta with this big coho caught in Double Bay with Capt. Millar.  Better fishing waits for us tomorrow!

Rick with the big hali!

Rick with the big hali!

Early morning mist opened up to glorious skies for a perfect Beach Bistro at Lizard Point.  In the morning, fishing remained strong for salmon, mostly coho and chinook.  Rookie guide Mark “Juby” Jubinville guided guest Don into the 2nd biggest fish of the trip- a 28 pounder.  After many threats from the other guides about getting thrown in, Juby stayed dry and was not tossed.

In the afternoon, guide Sammy led his crew of 4 into the deep waters where the big halibut reside.  And sure enough, his gamble paid off when Rick Svor bagged the biggest halibut of the entire year- an 84 pounder.  Congratulations to all- it has been a fabulous trip!

Blake and Brian celebrate the 35 pound tyee

Blake and Brian celebrate the 35 pound tyee

After a few slow days it was great to have the fish back!  Of the group of 20, many of the CHK guys limited on cohos or halis and several boats nailed the chinooks too!  Brian got his limit of Chinooks with Captain Blake, including this 35 pound hog.  Lots of great bottom fishing too- it was a great day to be out fishing!

hanks-coho

Our friends arrived from Edmond, OK today into soe of the best weather we’ve had all summer.  It is HOT up here and flat seas.  Hank finally got his salmon at Sund’s he’s waited for with this beauty coho and James Beavers trolled up this nice hali.  Needless to say, a bit slower than normal- we’re hoping the run picks back up tomorrow!

Paul feels good about joining the 30 pound tyee club!

Another great day comes to a close at Sund’s Lodge.  It was a glorious beach bistro with the threat of rain that never materialized.  The fishing was slower today but punctuated with some really great fish.  Paul (above) was pumped when he joined the Tyee Club with this 30 pounder taken off Cracroft Island this afternoon.  Morgan had the 2nd biggest fish of the day at 25 pounds and Rawley fulfilled his goal of getting a large chinook and a big halibut in the same day.  Way go go everyone!

Ingrid's fish of the day- 24 pounds

Ingrid's fish of the day- 24 pounds

Ingrid had the fish of the day today on the Burger Boat day but in general the fishing slowed a bit.  There were still some boats that did well on the coho but each boat struggled to find and stay on the chinooks like the last week.  During the afternoon halibut fishery, sizes and quantity was also down a bit.  Luckily Olivia and Tressa showed everyone how to fish when they came down to the dock and each nailed a nice cabezon in under a minute each.  Way to go girls!

Kathy's 33 pound tyee!

A new group of friends flew in from California and although fishing was a bit slow for many of the guests, Kathy nailed down a 33 pound chinook salmon caught off the Wall with Captain Geoff.  This wsa Kathy’s first tyee salmon and she was Queen for the night!

Olivia was also quite proud of this beautiful pink salmon, along with the gift of the green hootchie from Captain Blake.  It was a good afternoon all around.

The staff is loaded in the Burger Boat ready for some bonding!

The staff is loaded in the Burger Boat ready for some bonding!

As a staff, we love to gather and have a great time.  On Monday night we were awaiting our new guests’ arrival on Tuesday so we headed out as a staff (well most of us) with the idea of heading to Lizard POint to barbque some flank steak and corn on the cob.  We headed around the corner of Malcolm Island when we were greeted by a large pod of Orca whales.  It was fabulous.  We followed the whales for 20 minutes and Kincaid Sund, 3, said to his mother, “Mama, I’ve never seen this before- only in a book!  It is so cool!”  It was indeed cool for all of us.  The wind was whipping up a bit on the north shore so we turned the boat around and ended up on a secluded beach in the Plumper Islands for a fantastic meal of fresh baked bread, mustard/lime marinated flank steak, corn on the cob and s’mores for dessert.  It was a fun night as a group.  This year’s staff is absolutely one of the finest we’ve ever had at Sund’s Lodge!

the 41 pound fish of the season- so far!

the 41 pound fish of the season- so far!

This fishing just keeps getting bigger.  Guest Chris and Guide Sam struck gold this morning off the Slide with this 41 pound chinook.  It is the biggest salmon of the summer- and the largest of Sammy’s guiding career.  Congrats to all!

Nick also re-joined the tyee club (he is already a member from 2007) with this 30 pounder caught with Capt. Roland.  We are feeling thankful and grateful for this fishing!  The Maus Family and Friends just departed with 23 boxes of salmon and halibut!  Can you say “extra freezer space needed”???

Beach Bistro day is a hit- Joey does it again

Big Joe does it again

Big Joe does it again

The Bistro day was a huge hit today- although daytime temps and fishing were a bit cooler.  The first hour of the day was a great bite and Joey did it again- this time catching the big fish of the trip so far with a 29 pounder.  Sammy’s boat hit some springs, Emily caught a 26 pounder, but then the bit slowed down to moderate for the rest of the day.  The halibut fishers caught some nice fish after the Beach Lunch, namely this sizeable hali by Nick.  All in all, a great day- a great group!
