Big Jim and Capt. Mike bag a hog!

We don’t mean to sound like a broken record but it was another amazing day up here at Sund’s Lodge.  The sky broke and we had a gloriously warm beach bistro.  Ledge Point on Vancouver Island was very gracious to several of our boats, particularly Capt. Mike with guest Jim who bagged this 40 lb chinook on an epic 35 minute fight.  It was the experience of a lifetime for Mike and Jim.  In the afternoon they went out after the beach lunch and Jim caught a 26 lbr off Bold Head- that is 66 lbs of salmon for the day!  Not bad!  Many of the other boats limited on pinks and hatchery coho.  Alex caught a 28 lb chinook with Capt. Geoff Millar in Mitchell Bay that wrapped itself around kelp and provided quite a scare.  In all, there were over 45 salmon on the dock at the end of the day and lots of happy campers!

Jesse Thomas caught the big fish of the first afternoon with this beauty 15 pounder caught near the Lodge.  Lots of fish were caught in our first afternoon out.  Team Boone loaded the boat and got halfway to their limit- in just a few hours.  We’re off to a great start!

sunrise-day-3

Its an old adage but so true….sunrises like these mean bad weather is on the horizon.  We had 30 knot winds and 6 foot waves at times.  We fished until noon and luckily found a batch off fish close to home and limited out on salmon.  By lunchtime it was back to the lodge for hot tubbing, backgammon, and cocktails.  By nightfall the wind was already laying down- should be calm by dawn!

Lucky Left and Two Left Feet

jacks-hoglucky-left

Funny story- the new group of wine guys flew in today and our sunny skies quickly darkened.  By the time we were heading out, there was a full blown rain storm on us.  Jack grabbed his boots and jammed them on his feet.  He realized that one boot in particular was very difficult to put on- because he had grabbed two left boots!  By this time we were already headed out fishing and he was stuck.  Well low and behold, Lucky Lefty was on the rod and the 2nd fish of the afternoon was this beauty 26 pounder in Double Bay.  Wow- what a fight.

Later Clyde and Arthur, a.k.a Dan and Scott, decided to test for themselves how cold the water was.  Their analysis?  Yes, it is VERY cold!

Glorious sunrise and a few hogs

sunrise-day-4

In general fishing was slow for the last morning of the group, but what a glorious sunrise we experienced.  It was simply unbelievable!

Although it was slow, Mike Fligor banged his first Malcolm Island hog with this 26 pounder caught on the backside with Capt. Sammy.  Way to go Big Mike!

And Bob Rupp Sr (90) caught this 40 pound ling with Capt. Mike.  It was the bottom fish of the trip!  A couple of real beauties!

Day 3 of the trip started wtih mistry skies but by noon the sun had broken through for a glorious beach lunch.  Salmon fishing for chinooks was slower- but LOTS of pinks and coho remained resulting in limits for those who fished salmon.  Some nice halibut were boated in the afternoon and Vicki once again had honors for bottom fish with her up 20′s ling cod.  Big salmon of the day was caught by Peter.

Despite threats of rain and some short showers, conditions were unbelievable.  Calm seas and lots of salmon caught today at Sund’s.  Guide Geoff Duddridge took team Rupp and loaded on nice chinooks- with Lorna getting the fish of the day with her tyee.  Team Ribary had a great day with a limit of 12 salmon and 3 nice halibut.  Lots of other nice fish hit the dock- it is great to see the run staying so strong through the end of August!

sams-boat-on-water-day-1

The early morning rain dissipated through the day to unleash a gorgeous afternoon of broken skies with pouring sun breaks and flast skies.  Most of the boats ended up in Double Bay to load up on pinks and release a bunch of big, wild coho.  Big fish of the day honors goes to Vicki Rupp- who caught the biggest hatchery coho of the year.  Way to go Vicki!
