Cold front moves in but salmon counts still high

group-photo

Take a look at yesterday’s haul.  Although general chinook numbers have dipped, we have been very encouraged by the high numbers of pink and coho salmon around.  Yesterday the guys brought in over 40 pinks and released well over 40 wild coho.  The coho are just gorgeous too- averaging 14-16 pounds.  Fishing has been solid- and we’ve been having a great trip!

gregs-fish-of-day

Some nice fish hit the dock today despite slower fishing conditions.  Big fish of the day went to Greg (“don’t hyphenate me”) Norris-Jones with this beauty 27 pounder guided by Geoff Duddridge off Black Bluff.  Morning fog and mist turned into flat seas and clear skies for a glorious afternoon out fishing.  Smiles and good times had by all!

Day 1 of new trip yields some nice fish in a local "secret" spot

pauls-hog

The group from Echelon flew in today and there were some nice fish caught for the first afternoon.  Big fish honors went to Paul of Bozeman, MT who caught this 26 pounder with Capt. Nick.  Not a bad start!  This coupled with new info of a strong run of morning fish coming off the North Shore has the guides feeling very encouraged for the coming week!

Stache update- week 2

paul-stache

Despite the hard work, and mostly dedicated staff, the mustache club at Sund’s Lodge is slowly coming about.  As you can witness for yourself from some of the photos, Chef Paul’s stache has gradually filled in.  Rumor has it he’s been using Rogaine.

Jimmy’s stache is nicely trimmed but he won’t shave the beard- he claims the ladies love it.

Geoff is back on the stache wagon and his is filling in nicely.

duddley-stache

Geoff Duddridge has really developed a nice look with his stache- especially when he’s rockin’ the aviator glasses.

The girls are real troopers and continue their efforts.

As for Nick? Sam?  Juby?  The stache’s have been slower to come along.  Lets hope some more sunny weather will help them grow a bit before the month’s end.

Halibut fishing picks up as salmon fishing cools

mikes-boat-3hanks-80

Some awesome halibut fishing done today, with Hank from Oklahoma getting an 80 p0under- our 2nd biggest of the entire summer.  Luckily for us it corresponds with some slower salmon fishing that has seen diminishing chinook bites the last few days.  Doc limited on springs and got the biggest of the day with his 21 pounder but in general, chinooks were harder to come by.  The afternoon wind that was supposed to rise in the Straits never came so it was a calm, sunny day for our beach lunch.  All  in all, some very happy fishers!

Do these people look happy or what???

Tough weather produces some good fish

It was a WINDY day here in paradise but these guests form Alberta, Oklahoma and Washington weathered the choppy water to produce some really nice fish.  Lots of good stories happened but the most notable was Matt Lees- who started the day with the biggest salmon at 29 pounds and ended the day with a 57 pound halibut- caught on his salmon rod!  Said guide Nick Teichert, “It was freakin’ awesome!”  A tough day on the water but lots of fun!

First day of new group

Saturday, August 15th, 2009

brian-day-1

The first day of the new group was greeted with sunny skies but somewhat windy conditions.  As a result, most of hte boats ended up working Cracroft Point and although there were a bunch of fish caught, mostly big wild coho and pinks, no chinooks were boated.  Biggest fish of the day was caught by Brian Exline who boated the only hatchery coho.  Bigger fish will hit the dock today!

Another solid day- bite stays consistent

Despite a moderate morning bite, it ended up being another very good fishing day at Sund’s Lodge.  Most boats got several nice fish in the early hours but the afternoon bite was great down at Cracroft Point with guests who hadn’t gotten chinooks getting some nice opportunities late.  Along with the chinooks and copious amounts of pinks, there were also some nice sockeye caught but some amazing wild coho.  Capt Geoff’s boat, along with boating 5 nice chinooks, released over 10 coho that were mostly 14-17 pounds.  Said one guest, “I’ve never seen coho fishing like that.”  It is quite a blast to bring these big wild coho in, take the hooks out, and safely release them back to the wild where they can go back and spawn and make sure we’re catching these coho many years from now.

Slower morning fishing but guests still end up with productive day

kevin-and-sharonsharon-day-2

The red hot morning conditions cooled this morning but lots of persistance and  a day out on the Burger Boat helped guests end up with some really nice fish.  Big fish of the day honors went to Sharon and her and Kevin also did well on the halis.  It was a great day on Mike’s boat for Martin and Birgit with limits of chinook and halis and a tale of the one that got away with over a 25 pound ling cod that was very nearly boated before breaking the line.  All in all, a very enjoyable day!

matts-24-day-1
Day 1 for a new group from all parts of the world.  Guests have arrived from Germany, France, England, Vancouver, Seattle, California, and Pennsylvania!  For the first 4 hour fish, the group caught over 40 fish with 10 chinooks.  The big fish of the day was Matt’s 24 pounder, who edged out roommate Ray’s 19 pounder with their chinook taken off the Wall.  We’re off to a great start!
