June 29, 2010- Paul MacGregor gets big fish of the day at Sund's Lodge

mac g holding up

Some guys are just lucky.  Paul MacGregor, here at Sund’s Lodge celebrating his 10 year wedding anniversary, had just completed a limit of halibut with his boat when he decided to try a few passes for salmon at Malcolm Point.  Sure enough, after a few moments, the rod bent over and a huge chinook was on the other end of the line.  The chinook, just over 22 lbs, even made a few flying leaps through the air.  Said Paul, “when the fish started jumping I had no idea what was going on!  I thought it was a whale!”  Paul congratulations- big fish of the day! Burger Boat #2 on the 5 day trip

Tuesday, June 29th, 2010

Rainy and calm water today on the Inside Passage.  Some of the boats had an incredible day.  On Capt. Dudds boat the guys limited out on springs to get most of the guests up to a limit for the trip.  On Shaun’s boat, guests caught 5 chinooks as well.  Bob MacDougall got the big fish of the day with this dandy 29 pounder taken off Point No Point.  Chef Paul and Jimmy delivered chicken burgers to keep the guests sustained for the long day of fishing.  It was another awesome day on the Inside Passage!

june 25-29 group

Only in BC does cloudy with a drizzle mean its time for a beach party!  Although weather was more challenging today, we had an awesome party on the beach.  Good times!

larry's big one of the day

Larry Hoeg nailed this big fish of the day in a flurry of activity on Guide Geoff Millar’s boat where they landed 4 springs in the first 90 minutes of the day.  Way to go Larry!

roy with rod

Roy had this 24 lb spring within minutes of putting his line in the water this a.m. and the 25 lb chinook too so much line in such a quick manner that Roy got his fingerless glove caught in the reel and almost got his knuckle skinned!  In the end, he did land the fish-although the glove, finger, and reel all got tangled up pretty good!  Some real laughs came out of this one!  A fun day at Sund’s Lodge!

Don Lancaster joins the Sund's Lodge Tyee Club with a seal in tow!

Saturday, June 26th, 2010

Fantastic day today of calm seas, overcast skies, and some great fishing.  Lots of first timers caught their first big salmon and congratulations were passed all around.  Wayne caught the biggest hali of the trip so far and Scott’s 24 lbr was the 2nd biggest fish of the day.

day 2 dons tyee
The big story thought was Don Lancaster’s 31 pound tyee caught off Cracroft.  Guide Geoff Millar could tell from the beginning that Don’s fish was a “real hog” and was going to be a  trophy when all of a sudden, a seal grabbed the fish and towed it a 1/4 mile off the shore.  Don, Guide Geoff, and Eric and Wendi followed behind hoping the seal would let go and after quite a battle, sure enough the seal did let go of the fish.  And even with some of the weight missing, Don’s fish still tipped the scale at over 30 lbs.  What a great fish story Don!  Congratulations!

June 25 proves to be a great first day for new group!

Friday, June 25th, 2010

The group from around the US flew in today and had a great first afternoon under sunny skies.  Larry’s Hoeg’s group of guys all took their limit of halibut out of Queen Charlotte Strait in less than a few hours.  On the salmon side, Jillian Waldo got her first salmon- a dandy 25 lbr taken off Flower Island.  And the big fish of the day went to rookie Steve Parker who joined the Tyee Club with this 32 lbr caught off Cracoft.  Liz B also joined the fun with a nice coho.  A dandy start to one of the few 5 day fishing trips of the summer.  It is going to be fun!

Family Night

Wednesday, June 23rd, 2010

With the next group not arriving till Friday, it gives the staff a few needed days of rest and reconnection with our families.  Many of the staff went home to other places in BC, some are staying on the island and fishing and hiking.  For my family the kids decided they wanted to cook crab at the beach and go camping.  Last night we had a feast of boiled fresh Dungeness crab, fresh asparagus, and bread cooked on the campfire.  Not to mention the smores for dessert.  After the meal a Fin whale swam right by the dock.  As we went down to the dock to watch it, a pair of bald eagles scooped a fish out of the water nearby and sat on the logs and ate their dinner.  It was magical.  We set up the tent and camped out for the night.  It was the perfect night.  Here are some pictures…enjoy!

The weather finally got back to normal today with sunny skies breaking over the Beach Bistro and continuing throughout the afternoon and evening.  We had a fabulous lunch on the beach hosted by Chef Paul Shand and the First Annual Wine and Fishing Trip continued to be a ton of fun.
