A Grand Slam Of A Day!

Friday, August 19th, 2011

Today, the group as a whole had a terrific day! A couple of the boats had only a few smaller salmon to bring back, but everyone had periods of great action, and, together, the group had a real smorgasbord of fish, and many whale sightings by the end of the day.

The most diverse catch came on Cpn. Shaun’s boat, with a close second going to Cpn. Spencer’s. Shaun’s guys “Burgenhammered” the salmon, catching all five species today! Cpn. Spencer’s crew had a starry flounder, and 2 halibut to add to their chinook, pink, and coho catch. Gary Bond caught a nice lingcod, while trolling with Sammy the Blade, filling out the catch, today.

The Bistro took place in the Islands of Tsuiladas, and there the guests slayed some nice Dungeness crabs, while Simon “Vinestein” prepared a terrific lunch for them. After lunch, the sun burned off the marine layer, and the seas were flat all afternoon, making conditions idyllic for all fishing types.

This group is having such a great time here, and it makes the job fun for the crew too, as the laughing and joking continues all day. Hopefully, the early bite for chinook salmon picks up for the morning, as there were only 8 on the dock today. With an earlier start scheduled tomorrow, we think that might happen. The last morning should be a fish and fun filled trip. We’ll see!

Cpn. Bloody Nose Blake's team had a great time, and caught the biggest salmon of the day!

After coming close to the big fish, Catherine finally broke out, and caught the biggest of the day with Cpn. Blakenator. This 23lber took the prize!

Best Friends Forever!

The boys on Burgenheim's boat burgenhammered 'em! They boated all species of salmon

Brent had the 2nd largest salmon, a nice 21er on Burger's boat.

The boys on Shaun Vanderberg's boat nailed this double header on the turn. The pink on the left hit on the outside of the turn, and the right hand pink hit on the inside!

Spenny knows his butts, and he didn't disappoint again, today, putting them into some gooders!

Dhiraj has a nice butt here. It reached the 25lb mark on the scale, and came in as the biggest today!

Jason really wanted a halibut, and Spenny put him on one!

Tiny Dancer captained these guys to a mess of fish, literally!

Tiny took Craig into Millar's spot, and stole this 19lber right out from under their lures!

Sam had fun with these characters today!

Bondo found his long lost twin!

Taylor and his crew, Greg and Jamie, pose with their fish.

Jamie gets some chinookie!

Greg caught this tiny halibut with Cpn. Taylor. He tried to hold it way out to make it look big, but you didn't fool anyone Greg, sorry!!

The fish on Millar's boat were not worthy of photos, so we added a couple of action shots instead.

Benny sits down for a breather on Millartime's boat.

Simon's Blackfish Sound Chowder was a hit, as usual.

NorthWest Pipe Company Return Again.

Sunday, July 31st, 2011

One of our favourite groups arrived late yesterday afternoon. NorthWest Pipe arrived at 4:00 in the afternoon, and subsequently, we didn’t fish yesterday, but the sun was shining and everyone had a great evening hanging out at the lodge. Drinks were poured, and a fire was set down by the beach, where everyone headed, after an excellent dinner served up by the chefs.

After missing the first afternoon’s fishing session, everyone was eager to get out on the water, and the guides were in for a longer day of fishing to make up for lost time. They left the dock at around 5:30am, heading for the backside of Malcolm. Most of the guides stopped in at the Slide and PNP, but Cpn. Millartime, who was last off of the dock, decided to stop a little short of the pack, pulling into “the Bush”. They had just dropped the Grover Deluxe rig in, and Millar was setting the other side, when it hammered off, and Pete Seley was into his first of the day! He skillfully landed the chinook, which weighed in at 19lbs. A steady bite continued onboard, and the fourpack of Gary Stokes, Bill Smith, John Tripi, and Pete Seley, ended up with a nice pile of fish at the end of the day, including John Tripi’s 27lber, which took the big fish of the day honours. John’s fish hit deep off of Donegal Head and surfaced, taking 3 nice leaps into the air!

Meanwhile, up at the Slide area, things started out a little slower, but the boys on Cpn. Aleksich’ boat hit into a couple beauties early, as well. Some of the guides moved down to the Bush, while others stayed, but later on the bite really came on in both places, and everyone hooked into some nice salmon The guys on Samwise’  and Blake’s boat tied into doubleheaders, late in the morning, which is always very exciting, wether you land both fish or not! The guys on Cpn. Mike Hageman’s boat had a late start on the action, but when they started, they really went on a tear, hooking fish after fish, and landing several. Due to heavy rains, the call was made to  head back to the lodge for lunch, which was a nice repreive from the rain, before heading out again for halibut and salmon.

The halibut fishing was very slow for most this afternoon, though, with only one boat doing well. Gary Lewis, and Tony Eramo, fishing on Taylor “T-Bone” Logan’s boat, had their limit shortly after they started, boating 21lb. and 15lb. halis. They even had a chance at a big chinook off of Swanson Island, before heading in for the evening, but they were unable to land the slab. Hopefully, the weather is as good as the forecast tomorrow, and we can have our bistro on the beach. Wish us luck!

John, with the big one of the day, 27lbs@!

Nice Fishes!!

Filling the Samsonite bag on Cpn. Carlberg's boat!

These guys hit 'em late, but they hit 'em hard!

Eric Stokes with a high teener.

Darrell got 'er done, on this 18lber.

Taylor's Crew did well, especially in the afternoon, on the butts!

The Codfathers also caught some nice salmon!

Slow Day Turns Epic!

Tuesday, July 26th, 2011

On a day that started out very slow for most, the day turned  around very dramatically in the last 3 hours!

The morning did have some great successes, though. A few people hooked into some chinook, and several of them were on the large side. Rod Nelson, fishing with guide, Taylor Logan, at Flower Island hooked into a real hog. The guide couldn’t tell if it was off the rigger, as it held deep and head shook heavily, before turning and ripping off on a huge run. They boated it after a great fight, and when they weighed in at the dock, the needle stopped at 37lbs! Holy Shnikies! Another big fish was hooked about an hour later, over in Double Bay. Jim Parker was fishing with Cpn. Hageman when they dropped into Double Bay and hooked a big fish on the first pass through. It hit the Mustard and Relish Rig, and after a slow, deep fight, it came to the net. It weighed in at 31lbs! Two tyees in one morning is always great, but amongst 6 boats, only 4 chinook and a couple of pinks were landed when the burger boat arrived. What happened later on out on the halibut grounds would change everyone’s perspective on the day entirely! Flip to side two for the rest of the story…

Cary hits his favourite spot, the Wall, and hangs another picture of a 20+ lber!

Jim Parker did battle with this 31 lb tyee. Very Nice!!

Rod Nelson and Taylor hold up his badass looking 37lber!

Rod takes the throne for a night!

After a chicken burger and other treats brought out by Chef Terrell and Daniel, the boats headed off to different halibut spots, trying to take advantage of the small tides. Mike Hageman took his crew of Kurt Blythe, John McMichale, and Jim Parker to the renewed “Atlantis” in search of some good sized butts. Nick Teichert took the rest of their six pack, Don Blythe, and his 2 other sons, Kory and Kraig there too. They were jigging side by side, when each boat hooked into a significant halibut. Kurt Blythe hooked up first, and then his brother was into one soon after. Kory’s fish was a very nice 51lber, that put up a good scrap, a great fish by all standards, but the guys on Mike’s boat soon realised that they were tied into a different animal altogether! After over an hour, and several runs to the bottom, a giant flatfish slowly emerged from under the boat. The halibut was a monster fish, shattering the previous record of 196lbs., taken 3 years ago. When they brought it alongside the boat, measurements were made that placed the weight of the fish, at or above 310lbs! An unbelievable fish, and the fact that Kurt hauled the thing up himself, made it quite a story. Yet, the story doesn’t end there!  You would think that after fighting a fish of that size for so long, that Kurt would have retired for the day, but because he really wanted some take home halibut meat, he got back on a rod and continued to fish. It wasn’t 20 minutes later, that he was into another one!! The crazy thing is he brought this one in by himself, too, and it happened to be the larger than any other halibut this season, as well. They harpooned this one, and when it hit the scale, it was officially weighed in at 140lbs! Unbelievable!! This may be a record that is almost as unbeatable as Wayne Gretzky’s record of 92 goals in a single NHL season. Over 450lbs of halibut landed by a single guest of Sund’s Lodge in one fishing session! Only time will tell.

Meanwhile, guide Geoff Millar had made a guarantee to guest Alvin Carr, that he would jump off of the dock if he didn’t catch a halibut or keeper chinook. He had been fishless for 3 days and needed a boost. After a slow morning of catching yellowtail rockfish, they went to a local halibut hole, where a series of unfortunate events led to Alvin losing 2 good fish. Fortunately, they found some chicken halibut in the last hour and Alvin gets to bring home some fish… Cpn. Spenny had the Gilman’s fishing with him , and they stopped on Atlantis for one last drift at the end of the day, when Spenny started counting down from ten, before time to pull in gear. Marty nailed a perfect 50lber in the dying seconds, and now has enough ‘halibut to share with his family! What a great way to end it.

Kory's 51 lb. halibut.

The fish hold on Mike's boat wasn't holding much of this fish.

The Burger Boat Bite Was On!

Sunday, July 24th, 2011

When the fish master announced that today’s weather might not be the greatest, telling the guests to bring raingear and layers, he was either very wrong, or was just trying to make it a nice surprise for our guests today! Although there was a breeze for a short period early, and a slight sprinkle, the rest of the day turned out to be excellent, weatherwise.

The fishery also started out slow, which surprised some, but further observations indicated that Orca whales had been through early, slowing down the early bite. Things started out slow, but tapered up, and culminated in a great salmon bite, right when Terrell and Daniel pulled in and started barbequeing burgers and dogs. Some people think it was the smell of Terrell’s cooking, because all of the guests quickly formed healthy appetites at the same time, as the smells wafted through the fleet! The big salmon today came on Cpn. Hageman’s boat, caught by Elaine Bentzinger, minutes before lunch, which tipped the scales at 30lbs. dead on! Way to go Elaine.

After lunch the halibut really hit for some of the group, so at the end of the day, there was a fair number of nice flatfish laid out on the dock. For those that didn’t get a halibut, they can be thankful, that there are still 3 days left to try to get their 2 halibut. The biggest halibut of the day was hooked and landed by Marilyn Nelson on Cpn. Tiny Dancer’s boat, to layer over nicely on top of their already quite full fish box!

Good Times for Our New Group of Friends!

Wednesday, July 20th, 2011

A new group arrived today, bringing some old and new friends from Washington, California, Nevada, and Texas.

The weather started out very nice, and deteriorated slowly as the day progressed, but it held fairly nice throughout the fishing session, only threatening to rain. A few fish were caught, and a few lost, including a 2o+ chinook on Burger’s boat at the Wall. It unbuttoned itself right beside the boat, on Bob and Karen Meyers! Ouch. The fish weigh-in was a close one between Bud Carter’s 11 lb. coho, and Pete Mathews 11 lb. 2 oz. chinook. Pete wanted to prove that being the youngest (he has 5 older brothers) meant that you were the best, and he did just that by landing the only fish of the day on his boat. I’m sure his brothers will have something to say about that tomorrow, though! Four of the brothers are vacationing together, here at Sund’s.

Catching fish isn’t the only thing to do up here, either. In a short afternoon session, the guests witnessed seals, sealions, Dall’s porpoise, white-sided dolphins, eagles, humpback whales, and even a murder of wild crows were seen! Later, as dessert was being served, a humpback whale breached several times right outside the dining room window. It was awesome. We are confident that tomorrow will be full of fun and some great fishing. Let’s hope for the best…..

Downpours Greet the Guys from Chesapeake Energy.

Saturday, July 16th, 2011

Longtime guests and friends of the Lodge, Chesapeake Energy, returned today, amid torrential downpours. They had been weather delayed already, so quickly wrote lisences and ate lunch, before tearing down to the boats for a quick afternoon fishing session.

The rain quit, and it actually became quite pleasant when they headed out on the water . Things were slow, because they missed the good tide due to the weather, but a couple of nice coho were landed by 5:30pm, when the current slack came.  At the time guide, Geoff Millar, was joking with Sam Carlberg over the radio, having his guests, Dave Fisher, David Treadwell, and Kevin Ashley, pretend to get a bite in the background, while gabbing over the radio. Cpn. Spenny, who didn’t really hear what was going on, called Millar up, asking if they were into a fish. Millar replied, telling him that no, they were joking, when halfway through the conversation, the rod right in front of Geoff, slammed off in front of him, and began ripping off a pile of line! Dave Fisher had picked that rod earlier, and was into a real screamer. Of course, nobody believed them, but the truth was that they had hooked a tyee of 33lbs. After an exciting fight, Dave boated the hog, and took the Big Chair for the evening meal. What a fun way to get a tyee, and a great way to start the new trip. Wish them luck for tomorrow!

Fishing Strong on the Backside!

Wednesday, July 13th, 2011

Fishing was solid first thing, in rain showers and fog this morning.

The boys from Oklahoma were at it on Cpn. Carlberg’s boat, banging of several beauts, with the biggest, caught by Brett, hitting 27lbs. The rain slowed off fairly early, and with it, the fishing.  Most boats started around the Slide and PNP early, except Cpn. Jim Duddridge and Cpn. Millar, who started at Black Bluff and Malcolm Point. Geoff Millar’s boat with Larry Hoeg and his son, Ryan, and friend Quinton Huseman hit a couple chinook early, but the bite tapered off after the low slack. That’s when they went out to the Ranch for some halibut, before running back for salmon before lunch. Jim’s boat, with the Lancaster’s and the Shmied’s, started out slow at the bluff, so headed to Beautiful Bay, where Big Jim once again found a “contour” in shallow that gave them some great action.

Quite a few good chinook were taken before the Burger Boat rounded the eastern tip of Malcolm Island and started serving the boats. With the lunch crew came the sun, and with it, another chinook bite came on. Larry Hoeg’s crewwere fishing on the Battleground just before the Burger boat rounded Malcolm Point, when the chinook started hitting. A good series of activity ensued and soon several lodge boats were working the west end of the island. After the initial flurry, the salmon continued to hit all afternoon in sporatic bites. Wendi Lancaster hit the biggest salmon of the day out there, a 28lb. beauty, which her son, Eric, will find out about back at home, and will be very proud of her……..AGAIN!

Some decent halibut fishing was had as well, with 12 halibut brought into the dock by days end! After a rainy start, the rest of the day was gorgeous, fishing in sunny skies and calm seas. Overall, it was a great day at Sund’s Lodge. The pictures don’t lie!

"Oklahoma, Oklahoma, Oklahoma!!" (Ruprect the monkey boy)

The Lancaster and Shmied boat with the largest halibut and largest chinook of the day! These people are good!

Laurie and Nick had an awesome day with Taylor on the Stabi-Craft.

New Group comes Zooming In!

Saturday, July 9th, 2011

A new group arrived this afternoon, with some old friends and new, and a nice break in the weather. I was nice to see the sun pokng through the clouds in places, and the temperature was up today by several degrees.

The guides decided that heading off in opposite directions was the right choice, so we had boats from the west end of Malcolm Island, all the way to Baronet Passage in the east. Every spot that the boats fished produced some action. It was fairly slow fishing, but each boat had one or more opportunities to bring in a chinook.

Dan and Gay pick up an afternoon surprise!

David Roberts with a dandy 21lber, caught with Cpn. Spenny, real deep!!

Sidney Spiegel, with the biggest of the day a nice 22 caught in "the Bubble" with Cpn. Burger.

July 8th 2011

Saturday, July 9th, 2011

The last morning of  the mixed friends trip was slow this morning, with only 3 of 5 boats bringing in fish.  Scott Sund had two of the team Texas guys, who had, by far, the most action of all the boats, but failed to land a single fish! A series of unfortunate events would keep them fishless this morning. The Bernal Crew fished with Millartime and had just one hit, but landed an enormous 16lb. chinook, as you’ll see in the picture! They’re strategy? Sleep, and it worked. After napping in their seats for nearly two hours, they woke up and Katherine caught a fish.  Andy Sr. bagged a nice one on Jim Duds boat, again, at the “GPS Coordinates” in Mitchell Bay. Sam Carlberg took 2 of team Texas out, and had special guest guide Taylor”T-Bone”Logan with him. They had a double header of chinook, but they only managed to land one. What a great group of people you all were, and we hope to see you again soon. Thanks for coming!

Andy gets one!

Sleep works!

What a huge 16lber! Geoff Millar wasn't holding it out at all.....

Dolphins Steal the Show!

Wednesday, July 6th, 2011

A new group arrived this afternoon, with some first timers, and some old friends. The seas were flat calm and the weather was warm. The tides were ideal for a productive afternoon of both salmon and halibut fishing. But it was’nt so for most, as the bite never really came on today. There was a flurry of activity on Jim Duds boat, as the foursome from Texas hit 2 halibut, of which one was deemed worthy of keeping, a nice 12lber. On Spenny’s boat, there was a nice coho landed by Maddie Sawyer, and every other boat  had at least one good salmon hit.

The real show turned out to be the dolphins, though, as they really put it on for some of the boats. Tomorrow we will get those fish, though, OR ELSE!
