2011 Season Comes To A Close!

Monday, September 5th, 2011

We have had a terrific season, with calm water, good fish runs,

and great business in a tough economy.Everyone at the lodge would

like to thank all of our guests that spent their time, and hard earned

bucks, to come and hang out with us. “Without you guys, we would

all be wandering the streets of Port McNeill, panhandling, and

singing songs in front of the Liquor Store!” quote taken from

Scott Sund. As for me, ”the Blogger”, that is probably what

I will end up doing over the winter, as this is all I know.

Without my blogging glasses on, I am practically blind,

as years spent glued to a computer screen, have taken

their toll! If anyone knows of any seasonal blogging jobs,

please contact us.

Have a great year everyone!

A Sandwich in The Islands!

Friday, July 22nd, 2011

The Beach Bistro day was slow in general, but sunny, calm weather, soime good sized chinook and halibut, and a darn good sandwich, served in style, made the day!

With four boats heading out in the morning, the guides decided to spread out again this morning. Cpn. Millartime headed up to Lady Ellen Pt. and the Cluxewe River mouth for chinook and halibut with guests, Bud Carter and Rick Stephenson. They were fast into a really nice chinook on the cutplug and Rollie Blade combo, which Bud played skillfully to the net, a 22lber. After that, there was a very long lull, but just as they were leaving to join Cpn. Shaun “Bergenheim” Vanderberg in Mitchell Bay, they were pleasantly surprised with a perfect halibut, on the above said combo. I say “perfect” because the twosome had 3/4 of their limit, and needed one more for the trip, and were hoping for a 25-30 lb. range fish to fill out their limit. Rick got a 26lber which was also his largest ever! They joined Shuan in Mitchell Bay, and first pass in the kelp patch, Rick fought and boated a high teen chinook. After lunch, they did a nice nature tour at Swanson Island, washing their baits in clean, calm waters, and sunny skies!

Cpn. “Ghandi “Vanderberg took his guests, who special requested him from the day before, the Dennis’ and the Mills’, to Mitchell Bay, on a tip from Dave Sund.  Fishing was slow, but they ground out a couple of Mitchell Bay slabs and a nice sockeye. Charlie hit a 26lber for the biggest of the day! We paid tribute to Pope Charlie the First at the dinner table.

Not to be forgotten were the Meyers, Karen and Bob. After a slow morning, they managed to land a low 20′s chinook down deep off of Nowhere with Cpn. “Su”Spencer Horning before lunch. They went for some bottomfish in the afternoon, and were rewarded for their efforts with a 26lb. halibut, a giant quillback rockfish, and an even more impressive 17lb. Yelloweye rockfish! Great work.

What can I say about the Mathews “Boys”? Cpn. Jim “The Wolfman” Duddridge was having none of it when, suddenly, the boys cried out that they had spied a mammal running the beaches of Malcolm Island! They claimed to have seen one of the elusive and notorious “Golden Wolves”, which Cpn. Millar had told of the day before.  Cpn. Jim has not, and probably never will, live down the incident last year when he spotted a golden retreiver on the beach at Swanson Island and mistook it for a wolf. Soon after he announced it on the radio, a couple came out of the woods, and started throwing sticks to the “wolf”.  But Jim knows how to find the fish, and he did just that, putting Dave, and Steve, into 24lb. and 13lb. chinook, respectively. Pete,  again, wanted to let people know that he, as the youngest, is not just the best, but the most congenial of the family, letting his older brothers catch the fish today, instead of embarassing them again, by boating the biggest fish. What a hero!

It's not a tyee, but at least he didn't have to jump in the water!

A lodge record for the fattest halibut!

Coho and Halibut Celebrate Independence Day!

Monday, July 4th, 2011

The coho and halibut were out in force this morning, with several of each being landed, but only one chinook! It was a big one though, and Caleb Phillips nailed it, a tough looking 28lber. Right on Caleb! What a great group of people you all were, and we thank you for coming to spend this weekend at Sund’s Lodge. Until next time….

Jim Ribary celebrates with a small coho!! Great eating.

Celebration here at Sund’s Lodge!

Saturday, July 2nd, 2011

A new bunch of guests showed up at the lodge this afternoon, here to celebrate Canada Day! Our head server, Sheena Morrison, really kicked off the Canada Day celebrations, getting everyone fired up. She did pretty much everything she could, other than paint the lodge Red and White! As part of the celebration, we also planned to fish, as we had quite a few eager arrivals, with four families including 10 youngsters, 17yrs old or younger. The weather was not exactly ideal as we headed out, but everyone was in high spirits. The humpback whales were popping up everywhere on the sound, and eagles were soaring. The crew of Jason Fligor, and his daughters, Kate and Laura, had just dropped into Double Bay, with Cpn. Shaun “the Fish Burglar” Vanderberg, when their line took off and they were into the only salmon of the afternoon. They bagged a real dandy 20lber. Back at the lodge feeding the alpacas turned out to be a real hit as well.

We are hoping for some calmer seas tomorrow, wish us luck.

Beautiful days on the Inside Passage

Thursday, June 9th, 2011

Greetings all!

Work is underway in anticipation of our first group in a few days.  Today fishmaster Geoff Millar and Scott Sund headed out to fish Flower Island at dawn on a rising tide.  Before we even got to the grounds we were treated to an absolutely magnificent sunrise over Blackfish Sound.  It was stunning.

We set the gear and within an hour Geoff’s hunches were correct: there was a big fish to be had down deep on the Rolly Blades with a whole herring.   Geoff was trying out a brand new custom built 13′ rod with his blue Islander reel and his first fish of the season, on his new rod and reel combo, was a real doozy.  After a huge hit off the down rigger and some steady line pull, the fish shot to the surface from over 100′ down and in a flash it was all the way out of the water in a cartwheel motion.  It was awesome.  Both Geoff and Scott shouted in joy as the fish took off again.  After another 10 minutes Geoff skillfully brought the fish in to the side of the boat and Scott scooped it up.

It turned out to be the only fish of the morning as we headed in by 8 am to start the day’s work.  Before we left a pod of white sided dolphins paid us a visit and circled the boat.  We are feverishly preparing for our incoming guests but early signs from Mother Nature point to an amazing fishing season!  Stay tuned for more!

Spring at Sund’s Lodge

Wednesday, April 6th, 2011

Well, spring has officially arrived in northern British Columbia!  The sun is shining, birds have been chirping, and signs off life in the ocean in front of us are all around!  This last week I took one of the first loads up to the Lodge to start spring preparations.  All 15 downriggers were rebuilt this offseason- part of a lengthy “off season regimen” to get ready for our fishing season.  Below are some pictures from the property.  Start checking the blog more regularly…we’re waking up from our hibernation slumber!  Can’t wait to get out fishing every day!

Best wishes,
Scott Sund
