The Return of the Hali!

Monday, July 4th, 2011

Day3 of  the family weekend started out with flat calm seas and overcast skies, a perfect combination for chinook salmon fishing! And it didn’t disappoint. Some boats hit early and some were hot later on, but by the time they were anchored up at Lizard point for the Beach Bistro, most everyone had some very nice fish on board.

The Phillips Family, fishing on Cpn. Sam’s boat were slow early on, but as they say “One is often enough” held true when at about 9:30am Dave Phillips landed a slab! The biggest of our season so far, a beauty 40lber!!

Meanwhile, team Ribary were at it again, picking up 4 chinooks in a short span, ranging from 19 to 24lbs. The boys on Burglar’s boat hit a couple, as did Mike Grant, and his daughter, Bailey, with Cpn. Spenny.

The Bistro on Lizard Pt. was a real highlight of the trip, with the sun starting to poke through over the Coastal Mountain Range. Chef Simon “Vinestein” Vine prepped another awesome lunch, and the hot crab was as good as ever.

After lunch, 3 boats hit “the Ranch” for a try at the recently elusive halibut, and this time they found ‘em! Each boat limited on halibut, and Cpn. Geoff “Milt” Millar’s guys were also lucky to hook into a very nice lingcod. Jim Ribary hooked and brought in a 27lb. ling, the biggest so far this year.

Dave's 40lber!

The Phillips family and the big one!

No, Bailey did not catch this 22lber in the hottub!

Jacob gets a good one.

123....Halibut! (and it worked)

Jim Ribary is kind of a Lingcod Specialist!

Jason Fligor joined Team Ribary for the afternoon, and was'nt disappointed with his 25lb. hali.

Very Nice!!

Caleb had a great day!

Ryan Ribary blew out his wrist, catching too many fish!

A real purdy bunch!

The Pelican Brief.

The morning of Beach Bistro Day started under heavy clouds that threatened to dump some serious rain, but the crew headed out, nonetheless, with positive attitudes, hoping for the best.  There was an early bite off of PNP on Scott “Top Dawg” Sund’s boat, where Brent and Ben Peterson quickly boated 2 high teeners and missed another fish.  The bite slowed down, but there was slow and steady action amongst the boats for the rest of the morning. The weather held off quite nicely as well, with only a few showers throughout the morning. Travis and Rick Eiffert, fishing in the Bay’O'Pigs, were joined by Brent and Ben Peterson, shortly before the Bistro, when a large shape showed on the screen. Instantly, the starboard rod hammered off and Ben was into the fish of his life, which took several surging runs before it hunkered down deep  on the bottom. After a strong 15 minute battle, they netted the hog, and Travis “double tapped” it between the eyes. A beautiful  35lber, the largest salmon of the season so far!

Salmon of the year, thus far. 35 Pounds Baby!!

Brent and son Ben with their catch.

Travis and son, Caiden, step it up again, with a 22 and a 20!

The weather was very cooperative for the lunch as well, with a nice break in the weather lasting just long enough for a lovely picnic. The food was awesome as usual, and the company was great, making for good times had by all.

After lunch, the 4-pack now referred to as “John and the eyecandy”, went out bottomfishing with Cpn. Samwise, when they boated a rare treat! A nice ratfish was pulled up from the depths. Unfortunately, we don’t have access to the pictures at this time. A couple of nice flatfish were landed as well, with David Mowbray boating the largest, a dandy 20+ halibut, on Cpn. Spenny’s boat.

Woody and Roger Woodworth with their haul!

A brief visit with a pelican, was the highlight of the afternoon on Cpn. Millar’s boat, when halibut fishing was slow, and squalls of rain and wind periodically passed through. For some of you, seeing a pelican does not seem that exciting, and might possibly be considered a slight nuisance, but for us in these northern climes, it is a rare sight! None of us here have ever seen one in the area. They took some pictures, and even threw a salted herring to the big bird, which it quickly gobbled up.

Biggest fish of the year caught at Sund’s!

Monday, August 30th, 2010

My oh my.  What a day.  Paul Sprangers went BIG with Captain Duddley today.  In the morning tide off Van Isle Paul caught a 42 lb chinook, making him Top Dog of the whole summer with the largest summer caught so far.  Then in the afternoon at Baronet Pass, Paul did it again, catching a 34 lbr.  With 76 lbs of fish caught in 1 day, he joins a pretty exclusive club at Sund’s Lodge!

We had an amazing beach bistro as the sun shone all afternoon and the wind was flat.  It was just perfect.  Lots of other big fish were caught and the sockeye run continues to amaze us.  Experts are now saying it is the strongest sockeye run in 100 years.  This definitely feels like a charmed summer.  What a day!  It was all punctuated by a great beachfire on the breakwater at dusk.  Simply amazing….

A great day of fishing!

You know fishing is great when you wear the guys out so they need a nap at the Beach Bistro.  By the time the boats tied up for lunch, half the boats were already limited out on chinooks and had switched over to trying for sockeye, which opened for catch and harvest yesterday.  Lots of big fish to report:  Len joined the tyee club with his 30 with Capt. Millar and Tony nailed this 34 lbs with Capt. Spenny.  Mary also did great with this 45 lb hali with Capt. Spennny but top hali award went to Chris on Capt. Duddley’s boat.  An EPIC day of fishing at Sund’s Lodge!

July 27 first day of new group brings in a few HOGS

The group arrived today from as far as England, and as close as Vancouver with folks from California, Seattle, Kamploops and Minnesota sprinkled in.  The first afternoon was a bit slow but the few fish that hit the dock were absolute slabs.  Brad from Kamloops caught the biggest ling cod of the summer at 40 lbs and Andrew Parker nailed this beautiful 37 lb chinook at Flower Island with Capt. Shaun.  So far it is the 3rd largest fish of the summer.  Way to go guys- those are some real hogs!

Mary Joins the Tyee Club!

Friday, July 2nd, 2010
After years of trying, writer Mary  Peachin joined the Tyee Club at Sund’s Lodge!  Trolling on the north shore of Malcolm Island, Mary’s rod bent over with a huge fish.  After a monstrous fight, the behomoth surfaced and guide Geoff Duddridge told her confidently, “Oh yeah, this one is the one!”  Sure enough, the huge chinook tipped the scale at just over 30 lbs.  Congratulations Mary!
