Sund's Lodge

BLOG

Last Morning Is a Dandy!

The last morning with these guys proved to be a real good morning, when all of the boats headed west from the lodge. The sunrise was terrific as they headed out, and the fishing was pretty steady.

Quite a pack of boats were working Lady Ellen, but fortunately, there were enough fish for all, as people were hitting them left, right, and centre.  The Goemans guys from Ontario, had a great morning, fishing with Captain’s Samsquanch and Jim “Old Dutch”. They nailed a good sized chinook each, as well as sockeye, pinks, and  coho, including the biggest one of the trip, Brad’s 23lber! All of the boats got into good action, and beautiful weather really made the last morning special. We look forward to having you all back here again someday soon. Thanks for a great trip!

Brad "the inventor" got the largest salmon of the trip, at Lady Ellen Pt., which weighed in at 23lbs.

Jason lands his first chinook of the trip

Shane got this 22 with Cpn. Wolfman Duddridge!

The twins pose with their dad, and their near twin chinooks! What a morning, eh?

Jeff slipped this 22lber into the Samsonite bag on Sam's boat!

Greg enticed this 15lb halibut into 50ft of water, to take his anchovy.

Burger's guys had a bit of unfortunate luck this morning, but were able to bonk these nice fish!

Fishmaster Millar Has A Morning Off!

Cpn. Millartime had the morning off, recently, and instead of catching up on some precious sleep, he went fishing. He had rigged up his custom made 13’6″ spey rod to fish off of the downrigger, and headed just a couple of minutes from the lodge, where he hooked into a real beauty!

33lb. chinook, hooked and landed by Geoff Millar, at Coho Point, on his spey rod!

“Mr. Chinook” hits ‘em again!

The weather forecast for today called for sun and light winds on our Beach Bistro day. Sounded perfect, and it turns out the forecast was pretty dead on, as around noon the marine layer broke, allowing the suns rays to get through to us out on the water. A slight breeze came up, but in general, it was a pretty ideal August day.

Fishing remained active as most boats had steady hits from pinks, with a few coho and chinook mixed in. Lady Ellen seemed to be back on today, and White Beach Pass produced again today. Cpn. “Smokie” Horning took his guests to the north shore of Malcolm, for the first time in at least a week, and he found some decent action there, with pinks and the odd chinook, too. The boats at Lady Ellen Pt. had good action early, which tapered off for a couple of hours, but came back on as they fished up to the high tide. White Beach produced for Cpn. “Mr. Chinook” Logan, again, when he took Rich and Carol Capps there today. They caught a nice 19lber early, and after the picnic, picked up a double header of Nooks weighing in at 19 and 21lbs! What a day, especially when you add several nice pinks, coho, and a big halibut that eluded them, late in  the day.  A couple of the boats headed to some halibut grounds this afternoon, and 5 nice halibut came in, with Sandra Davis catching the largest, right at the last minute, with Cpn. Spenny, which weighed in at 44lbs! The last morning could be when we finally get a tyee on this trip, as the chinook seem to be making their way back into the area in numbers. Wish us luck!

Another teener for Joe.

Sandra bagged the largest halibut of the trip at the last second today!

Tom hammered this chinook at the very end of the morning at Lady Ellen point.

Sam's guys got 'em today!

The Pink Parade Continues!

A procession of large Fraser pinks continues to roll through the area. We are experiencing steady action on pinks, but also big northern coho, chinook, and the odd chum salmon, as well. Every boat easily limited on salmon today, with some nice chinook and coho in the mix. Halibut fishing seems to have tapered off lately, though. There were a few halibut on the line today, but only one butt and a nice Yelloweye rockfish made it back to the dock today.

The wildlife was abundant, with eagles, dolphins, porpoise, and sea lions actively working the area. The whales are still active as well, with Humpback, Orca, and Minke whales active in the area on a daily basis.  With all of the predators working the area, the herring really take a beating, and many baitballs appear on the surface, made evident by the masses of seagulls and eagles that get theirs, when the whales, dolphins, salmon, and diving birds do their part, pushing the feed up to the surface, where they are easy pickings from the sky.

Jason looks suave with his 10lb. hatchery coho.

Tony landed the only halibut of the day, this "big" 10lber!

Sam's crew had a good variety of fishes today!

Kathy picked off this chinook, right out of the kelp patch in Mitchell Bay!

Jim's crew with a real mess of fish!

Joe Mills pulls in his limit 'o' Chinook with Taylor Logan.

T-bone took the Mills boys out and they had some great fishing!

So good to have Mike Mills back after 10 years, He brought his son, Joe, with him this time.

Larry had a great day, taking credit for all of these fish, when his teammates left the dock early!

Scott nails the biggest salmon. It was hooked at the Wall on the Grover Deluxe.

What a good looking bunch of guys...I mean fish!

A New Group Arrives Today

A new group arrived from various parts of BC, Washington, Idaho, and Ontario, today. We are excited to have some old friends back, after several years . Everyone got orientated, licensed, and ate lunch, before heading off to different areas to fish. It seemed like salmon were biting everywhere, as every boat had decent action with pinks and coho. The Goemans boys, out of Stoney Creek, Ontario, limited on nice Fraser river pinks, with Cpn. Millar and a couple of boats got lucky, hooking and landing real nice chinook as well. It looks like things are shaping up nicely for another fun and fish filled trip.

Mike Ferreia caught this nice 20lb. chinook with Cpn. Jim, on his "contour" in Mitchell Bay!

Wolfman's crew did well close to home today.

Sandra got the big one of the day, a 22lber, with Cpn. Spenny at tha Wall. Nice work!

Rain Brings In Schools Of Chinook!

They were calling for rain today, and we definitely got some! There was a light wind this morning as well, but it was actually quite warm, which was a pleasant surprise. The wind subsided early, though, with only light variable breezes throughout the day.

The fishing started out pretty well for 2 of the boats fishing off of Lady Ellen, first thing this morning. Big Jim’s and Tiny Dancer’s crew’s did well right away, hooking and landing a couple of really nice chinook per boat. The action tapered off, though, and it wasn’t until mid morning when Nick’s crew got on the board again, putting a double header of dandy chinook in the box! Ken Jr.’s turned out to be the biggie of the day, topping the scale at 28lbs. That double inspired a couple of the other boats to hook up too, but except for 2 smaller chinook and a real nice halibut, the rest of the morning was dead.

Lunch took place in the lodge due to the downpour, so the team regrouped there, and headed out for the afternoon bite. The crew on Millar’s boat probably didn’t expect the bite that they did get, as on the first pass in the kelp patch at Mitchell Bay, they hooked into the first fish of what would be many during their 3 hour session! The rain may have pushed some fish to move into the area, because there were a pile of chinook and pinks in the bay, as Bob, Jaden, and Ian took turns hooking into them! They limited out on chinook, as their boat landed 6, and got some nice pinks and a big wild coho, along the way. Awesome guys!

Walt limited on these nice chinooks, and had a really fun day.

The Ken's, Jr. and Sr. with their friend Dan, had a great morning with Cpn. Nick, which was eccentuated by a double header of big chinook off of The Lady.

Ken with the big 'en of the day, a 28lber!

These guys got their limit of nice nooks, with Heavy D.

Jack and Pete nailed these beauts with Cpn. Jim Duddridge early, at Lady Ellen Point.

King Ken is sworn in with all of his loyal subjects looking on!

Bob Matheson, Jaden and Ian got into "the best chinook bite of the year" this afternoon. What a mess of fish guys!!

Jaden had the biggest chinook on board with this 23er!

Bob Matheson caught his first halibut ever this morning. He was trolling with Cpn. Millartime at Cluxewe when they nailed this 47lber!

The guests departed the docks this morning, with a beautiful red sunrise, and calm waters. 2 boats headed west, one south, and 2 east, as the guides spread out to find the fish.
Millar took his crew of the Ingram’s and the Lucarelli’s to Leonard Pt., where Monica L. was fast into a nice chinook. A few pinks were had there as well, before the bite slowed, and they headed to Mitchell Bay, where Jack Ingram nailed a dandy 22lb. chinook right in front of the Beach Shanties. Big Jim took David and Mary Peachin to Lady Ellen Pt. where they fought through the pack of boats there and picked off a nice chinook every hour and a half to end up with 3 dandies in the morning, all in the mid twenties! They caught some pinks as well, to fill in the times between big ones. Sammy’s guys, the Comee Party, went with Sam to the Slide, where fishing was slow, and they had just one big hit there, so decided to move to Flower Island, where they hooked into a couple good fish, and landed one nice chinook, and some pinks as well. Tiny took the Matheson Party to Mitchell Bay, and then to the backside of Malcolm, where they nailed pinks, and missed one good chinook. Shaun had Ray and Walt, and after missing several decent hits, they managed to salvage the morning with one nice teener chinook, a sockeye, and several pinks. Not bad.
Lunch took place in the Islands, and went off without a hitch. Good food, weather, and a friendly crowd helped make the Beach Bistro great today.
After lunch the weather, which threatened to worsen this morning, cleared and the fishers were treated to very warm weather in the sunshine, when they headed off in different directions. 2 of the boats headed out for halibut today, but it was quite slow, with only 2 halibut caught today. The salmon bite down at Cracroft was amazing, though, with non-stop action on big pinks, coho, and some real nice chinook.  It’s good to see that the Fraser pinks are still running strong through the area, and hopefully they will hang around for a while longer.

Ken picked up this dandy chinook, at Flower Island, just before lunch.

Dan bagged the biggest halibut today, weighing in at 28lbs.

The Comee party holds up their fish.

Mary and David caught the most chinook, and the biggest, with Big Jim Duddridge!

Jack Ingram caught this nice 22lber in the kelp patch at Mitchell Bay.

Millar's crew was fun today, and they got into some nice fish as well.

The cove was absolutely beautiful today. This group really had something to cheer about.

Mixed Friends Arrive To Sunny Skies!

A new group of guests arrived this afternoon. We had guests arriving from Vancouver, Oregon and California. The fog in the morning delayed the party out of Vancouver, but they made it here in time to get out for a few hours of fishing.

Some nice fish were caught, too, with the largest being a 22lb. chinook, which Sandra Ingram landed with Cpn. Sam “Crazyman” Carlberg. David and Mary Peachin arrived late, but headed out with Jim”Wolfman’ Duddridge, and they were fast into a hot bite on big Fraser River pinks. David Peachin told Captain “Milt” Millar on the deck: “That was the best salmon bite I have ever been in!”. Jim ran some “Peruvian” flies, and followed the schools of the large pinks through Blackfish Sound, where it was non-stop action the whole time. The sun was shining and the fish were biting. We can’t ask for much more than that!

Our first time guests, Ken Sr. and Ken Jr. with friend Dan.

Ray Morgan caught a nice 14lb. chinook on Cpn. Teichert's boat.

Sandy got a real beauty when she hooked this 22lber right out of the shoot, on Cpn. Sammy's boat!

Limits Of Salmon For Everyone!

The sales crew headed out this morning, looking to fill out their limits of salmon, and hopefully catch a few more halibut as well. Gary Bond and James Reynolds had had a couple of chances at good chinook, but both had been unlucky, being unable to bring any to the net. The short story is that they got their chinooks, and the entire group caught their limit of salmon, thanks to a good bite this morning. Top honours for the morning went to Brent McMillan, who nailed a 28lber on a plug. The fish hit the plug, was gone, and got back on, as it somehow managed to snag itself in the belly on the way by! After an epic battle of 25 minutes, the salmon succumbed to Brent’s pressure, and came to Sammy’s net. The staff of Sund’s really enjoyed this group, but everyone really missed Wally!

Brent had a great morning, catching the largest chinbook, and one of the only 2 halibut for the morning!

Steve caught this 27lb. slab with Cpn. Bloody Nose Blake, at Lady Ellen Pt. , on Blake's last day of the year, here at Sund's!

Thomas got a nice chinook!

Greg Pass can throw this nice 15lb. chinook in his special K bag!

James and Gary finally boated a couple of nice chinook!

Millar grows out a mustache for good luck on the last morning!
